IAC JV BOYS BASKETBALL: LANSING HOLDS OFF WAVERLY'S FOURTH-QUARTER RALLY IN 55-44 DECISION (2019-01-09)

Valley Sports Report
LANSING - Waverly's fourth-quarter rally fell short here Tuesday evening in a 55-44 loss to Lansing in IAC junior varsity boys basketball action.

"I was proud of the kids," said Waverly coach Michael Croft. "They battled the first-place team from the North right to very end.  With everything we've gone through in past few weeks, the kids played tough."

Playing without two starters promoted to the varsity, the junior Wolverines got off to a fast start behind seven points from Davis Croft, including a 3-pointer, and four points from Joey Tomasso en route to a 13-8 lead after the first eight minutes.

Brady Blauvelt canned a 3-pointer in the second quarter and three of his teammates added buckets, but the Bobcats trimmed the deficit to four points, at 22-18, heading into the halftime intermission.

Gavin Dowell pumped in 10 points and Carson Crandall added six points as Lansing used a 23-9 blitz to take a 41-31 lead into the final eight minutes.

Croft scored five points in the fourth quarter, and Liam Traub added a 3-pointer as Waverly trimmed the deficit to three points with 2:15 left in the contest, but Lansing closed the game with an 8-0 run.

Croft led Waverly with 16 points, 11 rebounds, four blocked shots, and three assists, while Liam Traub scored 10 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, Tomasso added six points, Nick VanHouten chipped in with five points, and Brennan Traub grabbed four boards.

Crandall led four Lansing scorers in double-figures with 18 points, while Dowell had 14, and Gabe Santiago and Eric Khan added 10 points apiece.

Waverly returns to action Friday when it hosts Dryden Friday.
