WESTFIELD, Pa. - Junior Aaron Lane poured in a career-high 39 points, including 20 in a decisive fourth quarter, to lead Athens to a 74-48 win over Cowanesque Valley here Wednesday night in NTL boys basketball action.
Lane, who knocked down six 3-pointers in the game, drained a trio of treys and scored 10 points in the first quarter, while senior Damian Hudson scored four points, and junior Keegan Rude and sophomore Ben Gambrell each knocked down a trey, but the Wildcats could only manage a one-point lead, at 20-19, after the first eight minutes.
Gambrell, Lane, and Rude scored four points apiece in the second quarter to help the Wildcats extend their lead to five points, at 35-30, at the halftime intermission.
Lane converted an old-fashioned three-point play early in the second half, and the Wildcats were 5-for-5 from the free-throw line in the stanza, pushing their lead to eight points, at 48-40, entering the final eight minutes.
In the fourth quarter, Lane canned three more 3-pointers and was 5-for-6 from the free-throw line, to fuel a 26-8 blitz in the final eight minutes to put the game away.
Rude added 13 points in the win, while Gambrell scored seven, Hudson added six, and junior Brady Smith chipped in with four.
Seth Heyler and Tyler Vargeson led CV with 15 points apiece.
Athens, now 7-1, returns to action Friday night when it hosts NEB, then hosts powerhouse Loyalsock Saturday afternoon in a non-league tilt.
