IAC BOYS BOWLING: WAVERLY KEEPS TITLE HOPES ALIVE WITH SWEEP OF UNION SPRINGS / PORT BYRON (2019-01-22)

WAVERLY - Eight-time defending division champion Waverly will not go down easily, posting a 4-0 win over Union Springs / Port Byron here Tuesday afternoon in IAC boys bowling action at the Valley Bowling Center.

Despite the sweep, the Wolverines still trail division-leading Watkins Glen by 7 games in the loss column with just two matches (eight games) remaining.

Waverly won the first game 1,006-920, then followed it up with wins of 989-885, and 1,029-925 for a total-pinfall victory of 3,024 to 2,730.

Eighth-grader Zach Vanderpool banged out a 688 series on games of 225, 246, and 217 to lead the Wolverines, while junior Derrick Canfield shot a 650 on games of 193, 233, and 224, and 8th-grader Ashton Pritchard had a 597 series, including a 226 in the third game.

Sophomore Matt Mauersberg had a 552 series for Waverly, while sophomore Richard Stevens added a 537, and freshman Jacob Forrest tacked on a 323.

Freshman Cody Blackwell rolled a 638 series in reserve for Waverly on games of 244, 194, and 200, while 7th-grader Hayden Larson shot a 482, and 7th-grader Carter Hayes had a 442.

Mitchell Hamel led US / PB with a 667 series on games of 199 190, and 278 and Michael Jesmer had a 600 on games of 220, 208, and 172.

Waverly returns to action Thursday against Candor at The Owego Bowl.
