BROCKPORT, N.Y. - Two members of Waverly Youth Wrestling captured individual titles at the 2019 NYWAY State Championships held at The College at Brockport this past weekend.
Brayden Bowman won his second consecutive NYWAY title while Leah Wolcott earned her first.
Bowman won 7-2 and 14-1 to get to the finals, where he pinned Lane Gebo from Carthage Wrestling Club in 10 seconds.
Wolcott, a runner-up last year, garnered her first NYWAY state championship in dominant fashion. She received a bye to the semifinals, where she pinned returning state place-winner Kaydence Golding in 32 seconds. She met Aurora Maring from WRCL in the finals, scoring a fall in 41 seconds.
Waverly Youth would send 20 qualifiers to compete at NYWAY with the goal of placing in the top six. Three more team members would reach the podium.
Mason Phillips finished second in his first year of wrestling. He pinned his first two opponents to reach the finals. With the championship match tied at 11 with under 20 seconds remaining, he was called for locking hands violation, which awarded his opponent one point. He tried a last second desperation attempt to win, but was taken down to his back, losing the match, 18-11.
Jax Myers placed sixth. After falling via pin his first match, he battled back. He won by pin to get onto the podium, before falling to last year's state champion, Logan D'Agostino from Victor, then fell, 12-3, in the fifth-place bout.
Isaac Peppard also placed sixth. He won with a pin to reach the semis before falling to runner-up Lucas Barbieri from Bombsquad Wrestling Club. He then lost, 12-3, to drop to the fifth-place match. He lost a 1-0 decision to Ryan Teribury from Corning, giving up an escape with four seconds left on the clock.
Both Eli Keeney and Avery Bowman came within one win of placing. Keeney lost his first match, 12-6, then won back-to-back matches to reach the top eight. He lost to Carter Leavell from Bulldogs Wrestling Club, 10-2. Bowman also lost his first match, 8-0, before winning three straight matches to reach the top eight. He fell to Liam Gadley from Wolverine Den Wrestling Club, 10-0.
Other competitors for Waverly were Bryce Stanton, Roark Ward, Maddex Presher, Leiland Stark, Malaikah Pittman, Jeremy Cleveland, Rhylee Stotler, Todd LaForest, Nico Rae, Joey Mack, Carter Stanton and Derek Thorp.
"They wrestled against the best in New York state this weekend, and have shown they are competitive at state level," Waverly Youth coach Justin Wolcott said. "Seven of the 20 qualifiers are first-year wrestlers. To walk out of a tournament with over 1,700 wrestlers(registered) with five place-winners and two champions is amazing.
"Two years ago, Waverly had less than 20 wrestlers on the team, last year they sent nine wrestlers to states with three place-winners (one champion), and this year 20 qualifiers, five place-winners and two champions. The progress these kids are making is remarkable and can be seen through their success this season. Waverly Wrestling is on its way back to the top!"
