HERKIMER, N.Y. — Sayre snapped a 21-game losing streak here Saturday afternoon with an 11-0 win over Unadilla Valley in the consolation game of the Emma Durant Memorial Tournament at the Mudville Softball Complex.

The losing streak dates back to May 2, 2018 when Sayre recorded a sweep of Canton.

The Lady Redskins dropped a 10-2 decision to Afton in the opening round of the tournament.

Opening Round

Afton scored nine runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to rally for a 10-2 win over Sayre in the opening round of the Emma Durant Memorial Tournament.

Afton scored a run in the bottom of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead, but Sayre answered with a run in the top of the third inning to tie the game.

With two outs, freshman Hailey McCaig ripped a double down the left-field line, then stole third. She scored on an RBI single by junior Lexi Post.

Sophomore Allyssa Murrelle led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a line-drive single up the middle. She moved to second when junior Erika Wells was hit by a pitch, and to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Brelin VanDuzer.

McCaig gave the Lady Redskins a 2-1 lead with an RBI groundout.

Murrelle, who allowed just three hits through the first four innings, struck out the first Afton batter in the top of the fifth inning, but a pair of Sayre errors opened the flood gates to nine runs.

McCaig doubled, scored run, and drove in one run, while Post singled and drove in one run, Murrelle singled and scored one run, and sophomore Sara Ciavardini added a single to account for Sayre’s wins.

Ciavardini started in the pitcher’s circle for the Lady Redskins, and allowed one unearned run on three hits, while striking out two and walking one in two innings.

Murrelle pitched three innings, allowing nine runs — one earned — on six hits, while striking out two and walking one.

Consolation game
Sayre 11, Unadilla Valley 0

Allyssa Murrelle fired a one-hitter to lift Sayre to its first win of the season — an 11-0 decision over Unadilla Valley Saturday afternoon in the consolation game of the Emma Durant Memorial Tournament.

McCaig walked to lead off the bottom of the first inning, and Post and junior Jillian Shay followed with back-to-back singles to load the bases. With two outs, junior Madeleine Dutra grounded a two-run single down the third-base line to give Sayre a 2-0 lead.

The Lady Redskins extended their lead in the home half of their lead.

Post led off with a single, and Shay ripped a line-drive double on the next pitch to put runners on second and third base. With one out, Ciavardini lined an RBI single into centerfield, and Dutra belted a two-run triple to left field to make it 5-0. Murrelle capped the rally with a RBI single into left field.

Sayre started out the bottom of the fourth inning with six consecutive singles, and scored five runs to push its lead to 11-0.

McCaig, Post and Shay stroked consecutive singles to make it 7-0. After a single by junior Emily Sutryk, Ciavardini and Dutra hit back-to-back RBI singles to push the lead to 9-0.

Sayre plated its final two runs on an error.

Murrelle struck out six and walked none in five innings, allowing only a lead-off double in the second inning. She threw just 60 pitches.

Dutra was 3-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored, and five RBI, while Shay was 3-for-3 with a double, three runs scored and one RBI, and Post was 3-for-3 with three runs scored to pace Sayre’s 14-hit attack.

Ciavardini singled twice, scored two runs, and drove in two runs for the Lady Redskins, while Murrelle singled and drove in two runs, Sutryk singled and scored one run, and McCaig added a single.

Sayre, now 1-15, returns to action Monday when it travels to Cowanesque Valley.
