WYSOX — Athens scored four runs early and, behind the strong pitching of junior Megan Bennett, cruised to a 12-3 win over Towanda here Tuesday afternoon in NTL softball action.

With the win, Athens keeps pace with Wyalusing atop the Large School standings — both teams are 12-2 in league play.

Bennett also supported her own cause with a two-RBI single in the second inning to give the Lady Wildcats a 3-0 lead. They tacked on another run for a 4-0 lead.

Athens added four more runs in the top of the fourth inning, highlighted by a two-run single by senior Mimi Martin, to extend the bald to 8-0.

Bennett retired the first 10 batters she faced, but Towanda took advantage of a pair of walks, and a hit batsman to go along with three hits to trim the deficit to 8-3.  With two outs and the bases loaded, Bennett recorded a strikeout to end the inning.

Bennett also pitched out of a bases-load, one-out jam in the bottom of he fifth inning by inducing a out pop out to first base, and a strikeout. She then retired the final six batters she faced to preserve the win.

Bennett allowed four runs on four hits, while striking out 12 and walking three in seven innings of work.

Bennett was 3-for-3 and drove in four runs, and Martin singed, scored two runs, and had two RBI to lead Athens at the plate, while sophomores Emma Repsher and Aubrey Hatch each singled and scored two runs

Junior Haley Barry singled and scored one run in the win, while sophomore Harley Sullivan scored two runs, and seniors Emma Adams and Leah Reid, and sophomore Megan Collins each scored one run.

Athens closes out regular season Friday when it hosts North Penn-Liberty, while Wyalusing has a make-up game with Wellsboro this week.
