NTL BASEBALL: NORTHRUP'S HOMER POWERS SAYRE; 'SKINS CLINCH SHARE OF DIVISION TITLE (2019-05-15)

Valley Sports Report
WESTFIELD, Pa. "” Freshman David Northrup bashed a go-ahead two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to help Sayre to a come-from-behind, 10-7, win over Cowanesque Valley here Wednesday afternoon in NTL Small School baseball action.

With the win, the Redskins lead Canton, which closed out the regular season with a 12-2 win over Williamson Wednesday, claim a share of the division title. They can win it outright with a win against NEB Saturday.

Northrup stroked a line-drive RBI single in the top of the second to give Sayre a 1-0 lead, but CV answered in the home half with one run to tie the game.

Senior Jon Cron hit an RBI single in the top of the third inning to give Sayre a 2-1 lead, but the Indians answered with two runs this time to take a 3-2 lead.

The Redskins loaded the bases in the top of the fourth on a single by Northrup, a walk to junior Cam Wheeler, and a single by junior Quinn Hanafin, then scored three runs without the benefit of a hit to take a 5-3 lead.

After a passed ball scored Northrup, freshman Brayden Horton walked to re-load the bases, then senior James Esposito was hit by a pitch to force home a run, and a dropped fly ball scored the final run.

The Indians answered once again with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 6-5 lead.

Horton led off the top of the sixth inning with a double, and advanced to third base on the throw. Esposito tied the game with a sacrifice fly.

For the fourth time in the game, CV answered a Sayre rally with one of their own, taking a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Sophomore Jake Burgess led off the top of the seventh inning with a single, and scored moments later on Northrup's two-run blast over the left-field fence to give the Redskins an 8-7 lead.

With one out, Wheeler singled, Hanafin worked a walk, and Horton ripped an RBI single to right field to make it 9-7. Esposito capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly.

Esposito relieved in the seventh for the Redskins, and pitched around a one-out single to preserve the win.

Northrup had three hits, including a home run, scored two runs, and had three RBI, while Horton doubled and singled, scored two runs, and drove in one run, and Cron singled twice and knocked in a run to pace Sayre's 12-hit attack.

Wheeler and Hanafin each singled and scored two runs for the win, while Burgess and Ficarro each singled and scored one run, and sophomore Zach Moore added a single.

Hanafin started on the mound for the Redskins, allowing six runs - four earned - on 10 hits, while striking out two and walking two.

Northrup earned the win in relief. He allowed one run on two hits, while striking out one and walking one in 2 2/3 innings.

Sayre, now 9-8, hosts NEB Saturday at 2 p.m.
