SECTION IV GIRLS TRACK & FIELD: TRIPLE-WINNER SMITH PACES WAVERLY AT CLASS B CHAMPIONSHIP (16 PHOTOS) (2019-05-21)

VESTAL - Junior Cora Smith continued her winning ways, claiming three first-place finishes here Tuesday to lead Waverly's efforts at the Section IV, Class B Track & Field Championships.

(Top-three finishers in each event advance to next week's Section IV State Qualifier, as well as anyone who meets the provisional standard.)

Smith won the 3,000-meter run in a time of 10:38.92, and junior Sheridan Talada was second in 11:24.27. Smith also won the 1,500-meter run in a time of 4:55.74.

Smith teamed with Talada, junior Elizabeth Fritzen, and freshman Olivia Nittinger to win the 3,200-meter relay in a time of 10:08.5.

Senior Kennedy Wheeler won the shot put with a heave of 33-feet, 10 1/4-inches, and junior Marissa Eisenhower was third at 30-feet, 11 1/2-inches. Wheeler finished fifth the discus with a toss of 87-feet, 7-inches, and Eisenhower was sixth at 79-feet.

Junior Melina Ortiz won the 400-meter dash in a time of 1:02.48. She finished fifth in the 200-meter dash in 26.74 seconds.

Fritzen finished second in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:30.23, and Nittinger was fourth in 2:33.06.

Senior Stephanie Hyland finished second in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:13.67. Hyland finished third in the triple jump with a mark of 32-feet, 4-inches, and senior Sarah Wood was ninth at 27-feet, 5-inches.

Talada finished second in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in a school-record time of 7:52.6.

The foursome of Hyland, Fritzen, Nittinger and Ortiz finished second in the 1,600-meter relay in a mite of 4:23.35.

Junior Alyssa Simonetti finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.43 seconds.

The foursome of Ortiz, Hyland, junior Sadie VanAllen, and senior Sarah Uhl finished fourth in the 400-meter dash in 53.63 seconds.
