YOUTH BASEBALL (8U): UNBEATEN WAVERLY, ATHENS TOP TWO SEEDS IN BRACKET PLAY OF GILBERT-BROWN TOURNAMENT (24 PHOTOS) (2019-06-24)
Valley Sports ReportATHENS - Upon the completion of pool play, Waverly sits atop the standings of the Gilbert-Brown 8U Baseball Tournament with a 3-0 record - thanks to a 5-4 win over Athens, while Athens, NEBall, and Troy are all 2-1.
Single-elimination bracket play begins Monday night with top-seed Waverly squaring off with eighth-seed Susquehanna Area at 5:15 p.m., and fourth-seed Troy taking on fifth-seed Sayre at 7 p.m.
On Wednesday, second-seed Athens will host seventh-seed Tioga-Lawrenceville at 5:15 p.m., and thad-seed NEBall will take on sixth-seed Canton.
The semi-finals are slated for Wednesday and Thursday at 6 p.m., with the championship game set for Saturday at 6 p.m.
POOL PLAY
June 15
Waverly 12, Canton 1Waverly scored five runs in the third and fourth innings to pull away for a 12-1 win over Canton in the opening game of pool play.
Avery Bowman scored three runs in the win, while Cooper Hugo and Brayden Hugo each scored two runs, and Maddux Presher, Jax Myers, Peyton Lawson, Levi Kraft, and Kenson Hugo each crossed the plate once.
June 17
Athens 15, Troy 0Athens scored five runs in each of the first three innings en route to a 15-0 four-inning win over Troy in pool play action.
Jacob Saxon stroked three singles and scored three runs, while Shea Davidson tripled and singled, and scored three runs, and Tyler Pelchy singled twice and scored two runs to pace Athens at the plate.
Ryan Hicks and Theron May each singled and scored one run for Athens, while Graham Steinfelt added a single, Easton Paul and Griffin Smith each scored two runs, and Eli Wayman scored one run.
June 18
Waverly 5, Athens 4Brody Lambert singled home the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift Waverly to a 5-4 win over Athens in pool play action.
Brayden Bowman singled twice and scored one run, and Avery Bowman singled and scored two runs to lead Waverly at the plate, while Cooper Hugo singled and scored one run, Brody Lambert and Jax Myers each singled, and Kenson Hugo scored a run.
Shea Davidson singled twice to lead Athens at the plate, while Tyler Pelchy and Jaxson Holbrook each singled and scored one run, Easton Paul and Griffin Smith each added a single, and Jake Saxon and Theron May each scored one run.
June 22
Athens 10, Canton 0Athens scored three runs in the home half of the first inning and never looked back en route to a 10-0 win over Canton in the final game of pool play.
Jacob Saxon and Griffin Smith each singled, sandwiched around a double by Shea Davidson to help Athens to an early 3-0 lead.
Athens increased its lead to 6-0, then put the game away with four runs in the fifth inning.
Saxon stroked three singles and scored three runs to lead Athens at the plate, while Davidson doubled and singled and scored two runs, and Smith singled twice and scored one run
Brock Gorman singled and scored one run in the win, and Ryan Hicks, Eli Wayman and Evan Westerfield each scored one run.
The Athens pitchers combined on a no-hitter, striking out 15 and walking three.
Waverly 15, NEBall 2Waverly jumped out to a 9-0 lead after two innings and cruised to a 16-2 win over NEBall to finish pool play at 3-0 and lock up the top seed in the single-elimination tournament.
Cooper Hugo homered and scored three runs to lead Waverly at the plate, while Avery Bowman, Brayden Bowman, Brody Lambert, and Axel Murray each scored two runs, and Maddux Presher, Cooper Skovira, Levi Kraft, and Kenson Hugo each crossed the plate once.
