ATHENS — Waverly scored five runs in the first inning and cruised to a 12-2 four-inning win over Susquehanna Area here Monday evening in the quarterfinals of the Gilbert-Brown 8U Baseball Tournament at the Athens Little League field.
Cooper Hugo and Avery Bowman led off the game with back-to-back singles to make it 1-0, and Brayden Bowman knocked in a run with a fielder’s choice made it 2-0.
Brody Lambert made it 4-0 with an inside-the-park home run to the right-center field gap, and Jax Myers closed out the inning with an RBI single to extend the lead to 5-0.
Susquehanna Area scored twice in the top of the third inning, and left the bases loaded, but Waverly took command with four runs in the home half of the inning in a rally that featured a three-run inside-the-park home run by Axel Murray.
Lambert homered and doubled, and scored two runs, Cooper Hugo singled twice and scored two runs, and Brayden Bowman singled twice and scored one run to lead Waverly’s 10-hit attack, while Murray homered and scored two runs.
Avery Bowman singled and scored two runs in the win, while Peyton Lawson doubled and scored one run, Cooper Skovira added a single, and Maddox Presher and Kenson Hugo each scored one run.
Waverly will square off with Sayre, which beat Troy 6-3, in the semifinals Wednesday at 6 p.m.
