ATHENS — Waverly took a big lead early, and cruised to a 15-5 four-inning win over Sayre here Wednesday evening in the semifinals of the Gilbert-Brown 8U Baseball Tournament at the Athens Little League.
Waverly will take on Athens in the championship game Saturday at 6 p.m.
Cooper Hugo, Brayden Murray, and Axel Murray singled in a four-run first inning rally for Waverly, which took advantage of several Sayre errors in the second inning to extend its lead to 9-1.
Avery Bowman capped the scoring with a run-scoring double in Waverly’s four-run third inning to push the lead to 13-1.
Sayre closed the gap to 13-5 with four runs in the fourth inning, thanks to three hit batsman, two walks, and two errors.
Waverly finished off the game via the 10-run “mercy” rule with two runs in the home half of the fourth inning
Cooper Hugo singled and scored three runs and Avery Bowman doubled and scored two runs to lead Waverly at the plate, while Brayden Bowman singled and scored one run, and Murray singled and scored one run.
Brody Lambert doubled in the win, while Peyton Lawson scored a pair of runs, and Jax Myers , Cooper Skovira, Leland Stark, Kenson Hugo and Levi Kraft each crossed the plate once.
The Waverly pitchers combined on a no-hitter with eight strikeouts, four walks, and four hit batsmen.
Nolan Raupers, Elijah Ross, Steven Turner, Caleb Gorsline, and Brayden Northrup each scored a run for Sayre.
