WAVERLY — Horseheads took command early en route to a 13-1 win over Waverly here Friday evening in pool play action in the District 6 Little League Majors Division baseball playoffs.
Horseheads sent 12 batters to the plate in the top of the first inning, taking advantage of three errors en route to a quick 8-0 lead.
Kohen Hugo led off the bottom of the first inning, and scored on a two-out RBI double by Lincoln Sharpsteen to cut the lead to 8-1.
Hugo settled down after rough first inning on the mound, and retired seven of the next eight batters he faced, but Waverly couldn’t muster any offense.
Horseheads scored two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to close out the game via the 10-run “mercy rule.”
Hugo singled twice and scored one run, and Sharpsteen doubled to account for Waverly’s offense.
Hugo was tagged with the loss, allowing nine runs — just one earned — on seven his, while striking out three and walking one in 3 1/3 innings. Bryce Laforest finished off the game, allowing three runs — two earned — on four hits in 1 2/3 innings, while striking out two.
Waverly, now 2-2 in pool play, hosts Corning-Painted Post Sunday at 11 a.m.
