DISTRICT 6 LITTLE LEAGUE (MINORS): HORSEHEADS CRUISES TO 17-7 WIN OVER WAVERLY IN FINAL GAME OF POOL PLAY (2019-07-01)

WAVERLY "” Despite an early Waverly lead, Horseheads took control early and cruised to a 17-7 win over Waverly here Monday in the final game of pool play in the District 15 Little League Minors Division baseball playoffs.

Coming off a 14-1 win over Elmira Heights, Waverly, playing as the visiting team, scored a running the top of the first inning on a triple by Jack Pipher, and an RBI groundout off the bat of Rylan Yeakle, but Horseheads answered in resounding fashion.

Horseheads scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning, then three more in the second and six in the third to take a 14-1 lead.

Waverly rallied with six runs in the fourth inning in a rally that featured a two-run single by John Calabrese, and a run-scoring single by Collin Wheeler, but Horseheads answered with three runs in the home half of the fourth inning to close the game out via the 10-run "mercy" rule.

Calabrese singled, scored two runs, and drove in two runs, and Pipher tripled and scored two runs to pace Waverly's five-hit attack, while Wheeler singled and drove in a run, Hayden Roskow singled and scored one run, and Griffin Walters added a single.

Jaxon Chandler scored one run and drove in one runs for Waverly, and Todd LaForest scored one run.

Waverly finishes pool play at 1-4 and as the fifth seed will travel to take on the fourth-seed Elmira Wednesday at 6 p.m. The winner face top-seeded Big Flats Friday at 6 p.m.
