TOWANDA — Duncan Thetga pitched four strong innings, and delivered the key hit in Athens’ five-run third-inning rally in a 7-1 win over Towanda in the winner’s bracket finals of the District 15 Minors Division baseball playoffs.
Thetga allowed just two hits in four scoreless innings, while striking out 10 and walking just one to earn the win. Eli Hicks closed out the game, allowing an unearned run on no hits, with three strikeouts and one walk.
With one out in the top of the third inning, Zach Fisher and Kamdyn Wheeler ignited the rally with back-to-back singles. After a walk to Sam Cheresnowsky loaded the bases, Connor Davidson and Hick stroked back-to-back RBI singles to give Athens a 2-0 lead.
Thetga then cleared the bases with a three-RBI double to right field to extend the lead to 5-0.
Athens added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the sixth — on an RBI groundout off the bat of Thetga, and an RBI single by Alex McQuay — to take a 7-0 lead.
Davidson was 4-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and one RBI to lead Athens’ 12-hit attack at the plate, while McQuay singled twice and drove in one run, Wheeler singled twice and scored one run, Thetga doubled and drove in four runs.
Hicks singled, scored one run, and drove in one run in the win, while Fisher singled and scored one run, and Graham Wanck added a single, and Cheresnowsky scored two runs.
Athens will host the winner of the consolation bracket on Thursday in the championship game of the double-elimination tournament.
