Valley Sports Report
WAVERLY - Noah Shield scored a pair of first-half goals, and Newark Valley tacked on a pair of insurance goals in the second half in a 4-0 win over Waverly here Tuesday afternoon in IAC South Large School Division boys soccer action at Memorial Stadium.

It was the second loss in as many days for the Wolverines, who dropped a 4-0 decision to defending Class C state champion Lansing Monday night.

"With the quick turnaround from our hard-fought game at Lansing, the late return home last night, and the heat today, we started off really slow and flat, and gave up a goal really quickly," said Waverly coach Eric Ryck.

"We moved some players around and toward the end of the first half we started to come around," he noted. "The second half was a much better effort and we were able to create a lot of opportunities. Unfortunately, we were unable to capitalize, but we are knocking on the door and our breakthrough is coming.

"The boys are improving every day, and it's exciting to see there work rate out there," added Ryck.

Shield scored a goal in the opening minute of the game to give the Cardinals a quick 1-0 lead, then scored again in the 32nd minute to make it 2-0.

Corey Young, off a direct kick assist from Riley Malone scored in the 49th minute to make it 3-0, and Nathan Sokol provided the final margin in the 72nd minute.
