IAC GIRLS SOCCER: TIOGA FALLS TO SMALL SCHOOL POWERHOUSE GROTON, 10-1 (24 PHOTOS) (2019-09-16)

Valley Sports Report
TIOGA CENTER - Defending IAC Small School champion Groton scored four goals in the final 20 minutes of the first half to open up a 6-1 halftime lead en route to a 10-1 win over Tioga here Monday afternoon in IAC crossover girls soccer action.

Groton outshot Tioga, 34-7, and a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.

"The most telling stat of the game was Groton's 34-7 advantage in shots," said Tioga coach Jim Walsh. "They 13 different players take shots and seven different players score goals.

"At times, I had to sit back and marvel at their athletic movement, control of the ball, distribution of the ball, and the power of their kicks," added Walsh. "And all that without Division I Canisius-bound senior striker Lauren Reeves, who recently left the team to prepare for college play."

Groton scored the first two goals of the game, but Tioga cut the deficit in half on a goal by senior Mackenzie Macumber, who scored off a cross from junior Destini Sweet.

"Speedy forward Mackenzie Macumber was a workhorse for the team defending and attacking," said Walsh. "She had six of our seven shots-on-goal and scored our lone goal."

Groton finished off the half with four goals, then scored four more in the second half.

Brooke Brecht and Emma DeMatteo each recorded hat tricks for the Lady Indians, now 4-2.

Tioga, now 1-4, returns to action Wednesday at Newfield.
