Valley Sport ReportSAYRE "” Northeast Bradford scored a pair of goals early in the second half to take a two-goal lead, then held on for a 4-3 win over Sayre here Thursday evening in NTL boys soccer action at the Lockhart Street Bowl.
Sophomore Mason Hughey slid a shot past the NEB keeper near the corner of the box and rolled into the goal to give Sayre a 1-0 lead with 24:37 remaining in the first half.
NEB answered with scores by Gavin Merritt and Brady Brown to take a 2-1 lead with 5:18 left in the first half.
With 2:48 remaining in the first half, junior Cody VanBenthuysen beat the NEB keeper to a through-ball near the top of the 18, chipped it past him, and then fired a shot into the back of the net to tie the game at 2-2.
Just 46 seconds into the second half, Sayre was whistled for a trip in the box, and Merritt knocked the resulting penalty kick into the back of the net to give the Panthers a 3-2 lead.
About 9 1/2 minutes later, Brandon Kuhn padded the NEB lead with a goal to make it 4-2.
VanBenthuysen scored again with 5:55 remaining to prove the final margin.
NEB outshot Sayre 20-8, and had a 9-2 edge in corner kicks.
Sayre, now 1-6-1, returns to action Monday at Towanda.
