YOUTH FOOTBALL: WAVERLY TOPS CV IN WILD 'A' GAME, BUT FALLS IN 'B' AND 'C' CONTESTS (2019-10-21)

WAVERLY "” Waverly won a wild "A" game, but Cowanesque Valley won the "B" and "C" games here Sunday at Memorial Stadium in the final weekend of action at the Northern Tier Youth Football League.

"A" Game (5th- & 6th-grade)
WAVERLY 33. COWANESQUE VALLEY 20

Brance Vanalstine scored three TDs to help Waverly to a wild 33-20 win over Cowanesque Valley in the "A" game.

VanAlstine opened the scoring on the first play of the game with a 65-yard TD run. Carter Davies tacked on the PAT for a 7-0 lead.

Bryce LaForest added a 30-yard TD run to end the first quarter to give Waverly a 13-0 lead, which it carried into the halftime intermission.

The second half was an exchange of big scoring plays between the two teams.

After Keegan Lane  scored on an 11-yard TD run to start the third quarter to trim the score to 13-7, Ben Shaw completed a 58-yard TD pass to Davies to give Waverly the lead at 19-7 after three quarters.

Hess scored again, this time on a 1 yard TD run early in the fourth quarter. He tacked on the extra point to make it 19-14.

Waverly would pull out the bag of tricks on the next play as LaForest connected with Vanalstine on a 65-yard halfback option pass to extend the lead to 26-14.

CV countered with a TD pass from Hess to Eick on the next play to trim the deficit to 26-20.

Vanalstine put the game away with a 17-yard TD run, and Shaw added the extra point to provide the final margin.

Waverly was led on defense by Austin Burns, Aiden Strope, Kaden McCarthy, and Shaw. Tristan Campbell and Laforest had fumble recoveries.

"B" Game (3rd- & 4th-grade)
COWANESQUE VALLEY 24, WAVERLY 0  

Cowanesque Valley had three different players score in a 24-0 win over Waverly in the "B" game.

Brady Bruce scored on a 15-yard run, and Steve Olson scored on an 8-yard to give CV a 12-0 after the first quarter.

Colt Woodring scored on runs of 26 and 5 yards in the second quarter to close out the scoring.

Connor Bentley, Brycen Fiske, and Axel Murray led Waverly on defense.

"C" Game (1st- & 2nd-grade)
COWANESQUE VALLEY 25, WAVERLY 12

Cowanesque Valley scored a pair of fourth-quarter TDs to pull out a 25-12 win over Waverly in the "C" game.

Waverly opened the scoring on a 17-yard TD run by Brayden Bowman, but CV's Landyn Huntington scored on runs of 65 and  2 yards to give CV a 12-6  lead at the half.

Bowman ripped off a 66-yard TD run early in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 12-12, CV QB Christian Walker scored on runs of 2 and 50 yards, and tacked on one of the two PATs to provide the final margin.

Eli Keeney, Triton Floyd, Grant Spiegel, and Maddex Presher led Waverly on defense.

FLAG GAME: Waverly won the Flag game . Dallas Harbst, Blake Bentley, Robert Henderson III, Nolin Kovarik, and Zi' Ran Thomas all scored touchdowns for Waverly.
