NEW YORK STATE GIRLS SOCCER: WAVERLY'S ORTIZ FIRST-TEAM ALL-STATE AGAIN; PICCO FOURTH-TEAM SELECTION (2019-12-09)
Valley Sports ReportWAVERLY "” Waverly senior Melina Ortiz was named a first-team Class B all-state selection for the second year in a row, and junior Gabby Picco was a fourth-team selection Monday by the New York State Sports Writers Association.
Ortiz, who will play Division I soccer at Siena College in the fall, is a five-year varsity starter for the Lady Wolverines. She was a fourth-team all-state selection as a sophomore.
Ortiz scored 12 goals and doled out seven assists in 2019 to finish her career with 60 goals and 45 assists.
"Melina is known to run down any ball," said Waverly coach Tara Hogan. "She has incredible speed, incredible versatility, and an incredible soccer IQ."
Picco, who was a third-team selection as a sophomore, is a four-year starter for the Lady Wolverines.
She scored 14 goals and dished out a team-high 18 assists in 2019 to give her 54 career goals and 38 assists.
"Gabby is an incredibly versatile player with a great soccer IQ," said Hogan. " She is consistently part of our attack, and our defense."
