IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: NEWFIELD ROLLS PAST TIOGA, 74-45 (2019-12-10)

NEWFIELD "” Tioga stayed close for one quarter, but Newfield pulled away in the second quarter en route to a 74-45 win here Tuesday night in IAC South Small School Division boys basketball action.

Katie Morevac and Jenna Goodwin scored eight points apiece in the first quarter, and Adrianna Royce added six points as Newfield took a 26-18 lead after the first eight minutes. Junior Olivia Ayres knocked down a 3-pointer and scored seven points, and junior Eve Wood added six points from the free-throw line to keep Tioga close.

Kelly and Katie Morevac, and Goodwin each scored five points in the second quarter, while the Newfield defense put the clamps on Tioga in a 19-4 run that extended its lead to 45-22 at the half.

Kelly Morevac pumped in nine points in the third quarter to fuel a 20-8 run that gave Newfield a 65-30 lead heading into the final eight minutes.

Senior Chloe Bellis led Tioga with 12 points, five steals, three rebounds, and one blocked shot, while Wood added 11 points, including an 8-for-9 performance from the free-throw line, three rebounds, and three steals, and Ayres added 10 points, four rebounds, and one blocked shot.

Sophomore Julia Bellis chipped in with seven points and four rebounds, and senior Giovanna Rossi grabbed seven boards.

Katie Morevac led Newfield with 16 points, while Goodwin scored 15 points, and Kelly Morevac and Royce added 14 points apiece.

Tioga, now 1-2, returns to action Tuesday at S-VE.
