IAC WRESTLING: WAVERLY FINISHES THIRD AT CAMPBELL-SAVONA HOLIDAY DUALS (6 PHOTOS) (2019-12-15)
Valley Sports ReportCAMPBELL - Waverly went 3-2, led by a trio of wrestlers who were unbeaten on the day, to finish third here Saturday at the 55th annual Campbell-Savona Holiday Duals.
Senior Ethan Stotler, junior Trevor Meyers, and sophomore Garrett Skeens were all 5-0 on the day, with nine of the wins on the mat coming by fall. The trio combined to receive five forfeits. Freshman Gage Tedesco was 4-1, with three of his wins by fall, and the fourth via forfeit.
Ethan Stotler was named the tournament's "Most Outstanding Wrestler."
Owego 51, Waverly 30Owego won four of the final five weight classes to pull away from Waverly in a 51-30 win here in the opening match of the round-robin tournament.
Waverly senior Rylan Laforest pinned Josiah Varga-Flynn in 1:44 at 126 pounds to tie the match at 12-12. Senior Madison Yeakel received a forfeit at 113 for the Wolverines' first points of the match.
After a Waverly forfeit at 132, Garrett Skeens decked Wyatt Gibson in 57 seconds to tie the bout at 18-18.
Cam Pidcoe and Zach Miner scored falls for Owego at 145 and 152, respectively, to give the Indians the lead for good at 30-18.
Ethan Stotler registered the first of his four falls on the day at 160 pounds, pinning Matt Gatto in 65 seconds to make it 30-24, but Kaden Russell answered for Owego with a first-period fall to make it 36-24.
Meyers recorded his first fall of the day at 182 pounds, pinning Nate Armstrong in 1:15 for Waverly's final points of the match.
Cam Bundy received a bye for the Indians at 195, then Tyler Benjamin edged Tedesco, 3-1, at 220 pounds in the only bout in the match to go six minutes.
Waverly 42, Addison 39Waverly won four of the final six bouts to rally for a 42-39 win over Addison.
Freshman Connor Stotler got Waverly off to a good start with a pin of Jacob Howe at 106 pounds in 3:10 Yeakel received a forfeit at 113 to give the Wolverines a 12-0 lead.
Addison won by fall at 120, and David Howe edged senior Rylan Laforest, 7-5, to trim the deficit to 12-9.
Garrett Skeens decked Anthony Burdick in 44 seconds at 132, but Waverly gave up a forfeit at 138, and led 18-15.
Back-to-back first-period falls at 145 and 152 gave Addison a 27-18 lead.
Ethan Stotler got Waverly back on track with a pin of Caden Atwood in 1:22, Addison's Colby Jones answered with a first-period fall to make it 33-24.
After Meyers received a forfeit at 195, Tedesco pinned Garrett Wilson in 2:23 at 220 pounds to give the Wolverines the lead for good, at 36-33.
The teams exchanged forfeits at 285 and 99.
Waverly 57, Campbell-Savona 24Waverly won the final seven contested bouts, including five by forfeits, in a 57-24 win over Campbell-Savona.
Freshman Mason Ham opened the match at 120 pounds with a pin of Greg Hargrave to give the Wolverines a 6-0 lead.
After C-S evened the match with a pin at 126 pounds, Laforest pinned Peyton Hodder in 3:37 to give Waverly a 12-6 lead.
Garrett Skeens made it 15-6 with a 14-7 decision over Will Aumick at 138 pounds, but C-S won the next three weight classes - via forfeit at 138 and first-period pins at 145 and 152 - to take a 24-15 lead.
Ethan Stotler started started the Waverly comeback with a pin of Jay Thomas in 1:44 at 160 pounds, then junior Adam Richart and sophomore Andrew Kimble received forfeits at 170 and 182 pounds, respectively, to give Waverly a 33-24 lead.
After Meyers pinned Damian Elliott in 5:18 at 195 pounds, Tedesco (220 pounds), senior Trent Skeens (285), and Connor Stotler (106) received forfeits to provide the final margin.
Canisteo-Greenwood 60, Waverly 30Section V powerhouse Canisteo-Greenwood raced out to a 30-6 lead, and never looked back in a 60-30 win over Waverly.
Garrett Skeens received a forfeit at 132 pounds for Waverly's only points in the early-going, then Ethan Stotler decked Caleb Kitka in 56 seconds at 160 pounds to cut the lead to 42-12.
The Wolverines got consecutive falls by Meyers, Tedesco, and Trent Skeens to trim the deficit to 42-30, but C-G won the final three bouts - one via forfeit and two by first-period falls.
Meyers flattened Jacob Evingham in 41 seconds, then Tedesco pinned Nathan Button in 5:19. Skeens finished the Waverly run with a pin of Jacob Mullen in 54 seconds.
Waverly 72, Thomas A. Edison 12Waverly received 10 forfeits, and won two of the three contested weight classes in a 72-12 win over Thomas A. Edison in the final match of the day.
Tedesco pinned Michael Teets in 1:20 at 220 pounds, and Kam Peters decked Spencer Meriwether in 38 seconds at 285 pounds for Waverly's wins.
Waverly, now 8-6, hosts Dryden Wednesday night.
