NEWARK VALLEY "” First-place Newark Valley increased its lead in the Large School Division here Tuesday afternoon with a 3-1 win over Waverly in IAC boys bowling action at the Cardinal Lanes.

Newark Valley improves to 21-3 on the season, while Waverly falls to 13-7.

The Cardinals won the first game 998-829, but the Wolverines answered with a 939-894 win in the second game. Newark Valley closed out the match with a narrow 982-962 win in the third game for a total-pinfall victory of 2,874 to 2,730.

Freshman Zach Vanderpool led Waverly with a 618 series on games of 202, 237, and 179, while senior Derrick Canfield shot a 590, including a 216 in the second game, and junior Matt Mauersberg had a 543, including a 214 in the third game.

Sophomore Cody Blackwell shot a 524 for the Wolverines, while freshman Ashton Pritchard added a 454, and sophomore Cayden Turcsik tacked on a 348.

Alex Umiker led NV with a match-high 663 tries on games of 233, 235, and 195, while Sam Umiker shot a 607 on games of 246, 142, and 219, and Jason Brown added a 592 series on games of 214, 184, and 194.

Waverly returns to action Thursday at Dryden.
