IAC BOYS BASKETBALL: TIOGA KNOCKS OFF DEPOSIT-HANCOCK, 55-41, FOR FIRST WIN OF SEASON (2020-01-21)

Valley Sports Report
TIOGA CENTER "” Sophomore Casey Stoughton returned to the line-up, and had a second quarter to remember, helping Tioga to a 14-point lead at the half, and its first win of the season - a 55-41 decision over Deposit-Hancock here Tuesday night in non-league boys basketball action.

"We played very good team defense tonight and with the aggressive defense, we were more aggressive on offense," said Tioga coach Brian Card. "With our young team, we are starting to realize that we have to play good defense for all four quarters to win any game.

"We are also realizing what a good shot is and when to take them," he noted. "If we can keep playing good defense all four quarters, and continue to take good shots we will keep getting better.

"It was a great team win tonight and I'm very proud of how hard everyone worked," added Card.

Senior Thomas Cook knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and scored eight points in the first quarter, and senior Sam Taylor drained a 3-pointer to help the Tigers to a 15-11 lead after the first eight minutes.

Stoughton canned a trio of 3-pointers, and scored 11 points in the second quarter, and Taylor added five points, including his second 3-pointer, in a 20-10 run that give the Tigers a 35-21 lead at the halftime intermission.

"It was nice to have Casey Stoughton back tonight for the first time since our second game," said Tioga coach Brian Card. "He shot the ball great and gave us another ball handler."

Taylor scored five of Tioga's seven points in a third quarter that saw the Tigers up their lead by one point, to 42-27, heading into the final eight minutes.

Taylor drained 7 of 9 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter, and sophomore Isaac Peterson was 2-for-2 as Tioga sealed the victory.

Taylor led the Tigers with 20 points, while Stoughton had a career-high 13 points, Cook added 12 points, and 8th-grader Ethan Perry and Peterson chipped in with four points apiece.

"Gavin Godfrey and Ethan Perry did a great job defending their shooter and main scorer (Caleb Walker)," said Card. "They challenged all of his shots and played great.

"And, Sam Taylor has another good night shooting the ball for us," added Card.

Walker led D-H with 25 points, including 12 points in the fourth quarter.

Tioga, now 1-10, returns to action Friday at Groton.
