GROTON "” Groton started fast and built a 17-point halftime lead en route to a 58-34 win over Tioga here Friday night in IAC Small School boys basketball action.

Seven different Indians put their name in the scoring column in the first quarter, paced by Garrett Vanbenschoten's seven points, to take a 20-12 lead after the first eight minutes. Senior Sam Taylor scored six points to keep Tioga within eight points.

Groton used a 14-5 run in the second quarter to extend its lead to 34-17 at the half.

The Indians continued to feature a balanced scoring attack with five different players scoring in a 16-10 third-quarter spurt that pushed their lead to 50-27 entering the final eight minutes.

Taylor led Tioga with 14 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, while 8th-grader Ethan Perry scored eight points, and senior Thomas Cook added seven points.

Vanbenschoten led Groton with 12 points, while Drew Jackson scored 11 points, Kalib Manning added 10 points, and James Lucey and Kade Eldred chipped in with nine points apiece.

Tioga, now 1-11, returns to action Monday when it hosts Edison in a 5:30 p.m. (varsity only) start.
