ATHENS "” Athens got off to a slow start, then saw its furious second-half comeback attempt come up just short in a 55-51 loss to Windsor here Monday night in non-league girls basketball action.

Windsor scored the first 14 points of the game, but a 3-pointer by Megan Collins, and a conventional three-point play by sophomore Caydence Macik helped the Lady Wildcats trim the deficit to 10 points, at 19-9, at the end of the first quarter.

The Lady Black Knights put together a 17-6 run in the second quarter to take a 36-15 lead at the half.
They led 38-17 early in the second half, but the Lady Wildcats closed out the third quarter with an 11-2 run to cut the deficit to 40-28 entering the final eight minutes.

Junior Kayleigh Miller had a rare four-point play and drained another 3-pointer in the fourth quarter, while senior Haley Barry pumped in 10 points in the final stanza to close the gap to 54-51 with 11 seconds remaining, but the Lady Wildcats missed on a chance to tie the game.

Lucy Beattie made a fee throw - her only point of the game - to secure the win for Windsor.

The Lady Black Knights made just 7 of 19 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter.

Barry led Athens with 17 points and six rebounds, while Miller had 11 points, six rebounds, four assists, and four steals, and Macik had 10 points and six boards.

Collins scored six points on a pair of 3-pointers for the Lady Wildcats, while junior Rachel Stephens chipped in with five points and three rebounds, and senior Avery Priester doled out four assists.

Hannah Haggerman led Windsor with 22 points, including 10 in the first quarter, while Riley Miner scored 17 points, including 12 in the first half, and Allison Radicchio added 11 points.

Athens, now 13-3, hosts Wyalusing Tuesday night.
