MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. - Waverly grad Wendi Hammond, a freshman on the University of Albany softball team, earned her first start in the pitcher's  and recorded the first win of her collegiate career over the weekend.

Athens grad Emma Adams, a freshman, also saw her first collegiate action for the Lady Danes.

Hammond earned her first collegiate victory Sunday in a 7-6 win over Manhattan.

Hammond entered the game with Albany trailing 3-1 in the top of the fourth inning. The Lady Danes scored three runs in the home half of the fifth, and two more in the sixth to take a 7-3 lead.

Hammond pitched three innings of two-hit shutout softball before being touched up for three unearned runs in the top of the seventh inning. She allowed two hits in the seventh, and the Lady Danes committed two errors in the frame.

Hammond allowed three runs - all unearned - on five hits in 3 2/3 innings She struck out one.

She was also hitless in her first two collegiate at-bats.

On Saturday, Hammond earned her first start in the circle, and was a tough-luck loser in a 2-1 walk-off decision against Columbia University.

She pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing two runs - one earned - on seven hits, while striking out three and walking two.

Hammond made her collegiate debut Friday in Albany's 5-2 win over Providence. She allowed one earned run on two hits, with two strikeouts in one inning of work.

Adams appeared in three games. She was 0-for-2 in her collegiate debut, a 12-5 loss to Cornell Friday, and 0-for-1 in a 6-1 win over Merrimack College. She was a defensive replacement in center field against Manhattan.

Albany, now 3-2, returns to action Friday in games against Western Michigan and Dartmouth at Longwood, Fla. The first of six games over the weekend.
