COLLEGE WRESTLING: ATHENS GRAD COURTNEY PLACES THIRD AT MAT TOWN II TOURNAMENT AT LOCK HAVEN (2020-02-25)

LOCK HAVEN "” Athens grad Brian Courtney, a redshirt sophomore on the University of Virginia wrestling team, placed third Sunday here at the Mat Town II Tournament at Lock Haven University.

In the opening round, Courtney, the second seed, scored a fall in 2:55 over Pitt-Johnstown's Alexander Miscovich, but he dropped a 14-12 decision to eventual champ Malkye Hines of Lehigh in the quarterfinals.

In his first wrestleback match, Courtney forged an 11-7 decision over his Virginia teammate Scotty Kiyono. He then beat another teammate, Nick Coy, in a 6-1 decision.

In the consolation semifinals, Courtney won via injury default over top seed Dan Moran of Lehigh.

In the third-place match, Courtney decked Lehigh's Mitchell Polito in 55 seconds.

On the season, Courtney is 20-12, with five falls and one technical falls. He is 8-5 in duals this season, and is second on the team with 37 dual points.

Virginia returns to action March 8 at the ACC Championships in Pittsburgh.
