Valley Sports ReportTHE VALLEY "” Valley rivals Athens and Sayre will play in a District 4 boys basketball doubleheader tonight a the Troy Commons Building, with Sayre playoff for a berth in the PIAA playoffs, and Athens still alive for a district title.
BOYS BASKETBALL
District 4 Playoffs
Class AAAA Semifinals
5-Athens (18-6) vs. 1-Montoursville (18-5), 8 p.m. @ Troy Commons Building: The Wildcats are coming off a 62-57 win over fourth-seed Lewisburg Friday, while the Warriors rolled to a 75-48 win over eighth-seed Midd-West.
The two teams have mixed results against common opponents. Athens beat North Penn-Mansfield by 20 at home, then lost by 16 at NP-M, while Montoursville beat NP-Mansfield by 21
Athens beat Lewisburg by five, while Montoursville beat the Green Dragons by nine early in the season, then lost to them by one late in the season.
Athens lost by 28 at unbeaten Loyalsock, while Montoursville lost by eight at home to the Lancers, and by 14 at home.
The winner will face the winner of the game between second-seed Danville (19-6) and sixth-seed Jersey Shore (13-10). The losers will square off in the consolation game for the final PIAA playoff spot.
Class AA Consolation
6-Sayre (12-12) vs. 5-Canton (13-12), 6 p.m. @ Troy Commons Building: The Redskins are coming off a 65-50 loss to second-seed Bloomsburg Saturday, while the Warriors dropped a 44-43 decision to third-seed Wyalusing.
Sayre owns a pair of wins over Canton this season. On Jan. 17, Sayre won at home 60-52, and then finished off the season sweep on Jan. 30 with a 60-48 win at Canton.
The winners earns a berth in the PIAA, Class AA playoffs.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Section IV Playoffs
Class C Opening Round
13-Tioga (9-11) at 4-Union Springs (16-3), 6 p.m.: The Tigers closed out the regular season with three straight wins to lock up a postseason berth.
During the regular season, Tioga dropped a 66-42 decision at Union Springs.
The winner will play the winner of the opening-round game between fifth-seed Delhi (15-4) and 12th-seed Thomas A. Edison (8-12) in the quarterfinals on Feb. 29.
BOYS & GIRLS SWIMMING
District 4 Championships at Williamsport H.S., 6 p.m.: Athens and Sayre swimmers are in action tonight in Day 1 of the district meet at the "Mansion on the Hill."
Sayre senior Jillian Shay is the fourth seed in the 200-yard freestyle with a seed time of 2:06.82, and the sixth seed in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:46.77.
Sayre senior Kayla Hughey is the seventh seed in the 100-yard backstroke with a seed time of 1:10.73.
Athens freshman Taegan Williams is the fifth seed in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:45.17 and is the sixth seed in the 200-yard freestyle with a seed time of 2:09.42, while sophomore Brooke Kopatz is the seventh seed in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:16.58.
The 400-yard freestyle relay team of seniors Allyson Rockwell and Lauren Neville, Kopatz, and Williams is the fifth seed at 4:06.0.
Also competing are Athens freshmen Taylar Fisher and Ally Thoman, sophomore Raven McCarthy-Gardner, seniors Christian Bard and Kaitlin Kisner, and Sayre senior Jordyn Maxim and freshman Elizabeth Boyle.
On the boys side, Athens freshman Chris DeForest is the seventh seed in 50-yard freestyle with a seed time of 24.72 seconds
Athens junior Mason Henderson is the eighth seed in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 1:05.06, while junior Zac Gowin is the eighth seed in the 500-yard freestyle with a seed time of 5:58.03, sophomore Kaden Gorsline is the eighth seed in the 100-yard backstroke at 1:08.62, and senior T.J. Toscano is the eighth seed in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:16.77.
The 200-yard freestyle team of senior Nate Gorsline, Henderson, Joe Toscano, and DeForest is seeded fourth with a seed time of 1:42.61, and the foursome of Henderson, Joe Toscano, Nate Gorsline, and DeForest is the fifth seed in the 400-yard freestyle at 3:50.9.
Also competing is Athens freshman Ethan Denlinger.
