DISTRICT 4 SWIMMING: SAYRE'S SHAY, ATHENS RELAY POST TOP FINISHES AT DAY 1 OF DISTRICT 4 MEET (2020-02-26)
Valley Sports ReportWILLIAMSPORT - Sayre senior Jillian Shay had a fifth-place finish - the top individual effort for a Valley swimmer - here Wednesday on Day 1 of the District 4, Class AA swimming championships, while a pair of Athens relays - one girls and one boys - also recorded fifth-place finishes.
GIRLSShay finished fifth in the 200-yard freestyle in a personal-best time of 2:05.33, while Athens freshman Taegan Williams was sixth in 2:06.61, and Athens senior Lauren Neville was 13th in 2:13.28.
The Athens foursome of seniors Allyson Rockwell and Lauren Neville, sophomore Brooke Kopatz, and Williams finished fifth in the 200-yard free relay in a time of 1:52.93, and the Sayre foursome of Shay, seniors Kayla Hughey and Jordyn Maxim, and freshman Elizabeth Boyle finished 10th in a season-best time of 2:01.1.
Athens freshman Taylar Fisher and Ally Thoman, sophomore Raven McCarthy-Gardner, and senior Christina Bard teamed to finish seventh in the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 2:12.89, and the Sayre foursome of Shay, Hughey, and freshmen Makenna Garrison and Elizabeth Boyle finished 10th in a season-best time of 2:17.7.
Fisher finished ninth in the 200-yard IM in a time of 2:33.06, and Kopatz was 13th in 2:38.93.
Hughey finished 10th in the 50-yard freestyle in 28.0 seconds, and McCarthy-Gardner was 16th in 29.22 seconds.
Bard finished 13th in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 1:15.02, and Rockwell was 14th in 1:17.47.
BOYSThe Athens foursome of juniors Mason Henderson and Joe Toscano, senior Nate Gorsline, and freshman Chris DeForest finished fifth in the 200-yard free relay in a time of 1:40.66.
Henderson and Joe Toscano teamed with senior T.J. Toscano, and sophomore Kaden Gorsline finished sixth in the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 2:00.88.
Freshman Ethan Denlinger finished eighth in the 200-yard IM in a time of 2:26.59, while DeForest finished eighth in the 50-yard freestyle in 24.83 seconds, and senior Nate Gorsline was 11th in 25.3 seconds
Henderson finished ninth in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 1:04.69, and junior Zac Gowin finished 13th in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:11.64.
Day 2 of the District 4 Swimming Championships begins Thursday at 6 p.m.
