GOV. WOLF 'RECOMMENDS' POSTPONEMENT OF HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS UNTIL JAN. 1 (2020-08-06)

Valley Sports Report
HARRISBURG, Pa. - Gov. Tom Wolf is recommending postponing high school sports in Pennsylvania until Jan. 1.

Wolf suggested the postponement at the end of a Thursday morning press conference updating the COVID-19 pandemic situation. Wolf's response came after reporter Chelsea Koerbler from Fox 43 in Harrisburg asked about the guidance for spectators in high school sports this fall.

"The guidance is we ought to avoid any congregate settings, and that means anything that brings people together is going to help that virus get us," Wolf said.

"We ought to do everything we can to defeat that virus, so anytime we get together for any reason, that's a problem, because it makes it easier for that virus to spread," he added. "So the guidance from us, the recommendation, is that we don't do any sports until Jan. 1."

Since it is only a recommendation at this point, the PIAA is not required to follow it and could still begin official practices Aug. 17.

The PIAA has not responded to the governor's comments and apparently was unaware he was going to make the recommendation.
