NTL GIRLS SOCCER: ATHENS, WELLSBORO BATTLE TO 1-1 TIE (2020-09-16)
Valley Sports ReportWELLSBORO "” Athens controlled the majority of the action Wednesday afternoon, but had to settle for a 1-1 double-overtime tie with Wellsboro in NTL girls soccer action.
The Lady Wildcats, now 1-0-1, had a 24-4 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.
"I thought we played really well in moments, but our youth also showed up," said Athens coach Rich Pitts.
"We were also a bit unlucky with some scoring chances that we didn't capitalize on," added Pitts.
Senior Emma Roe scored Athens' goal, off "a great assist' from freshman Mya Thompson, with 8:23 remaining in the first half.
About four minutes into the second half Wellsboro's Cara Tennis tied the game with an unassisted goal.
The two teams then battled for the final 56 minutes without a tally.
Pitts said the game will help his team get better.
"Playing 100 minutes continues to grow our young ones in high level moments, which is exactly what we need moving through the season and beyond.
"All five of our freshman played huge minutes for us, including four of them starting the game," said Pitts.
Athens hosts North Penn-Mansfield Saturday at 10 a.m.
