NTL BOYS SOCCER: SAYRE FALLS IN WILD, 9-6, DECISION AT SULLIVAN COUNTY (2020-09-19)
Valley Sports Report
LAPORTE "” Sayre played short-handed for a majority of the game, thanks to an injury and a pair of red cards, in a wild, 9-6, loss to Sullivan County here Saturday afternoon in non-league boys soccer action.
"We played most of the game with 10 players due to a red card ... then our goalie was given a red for running into a player on a 50-50 ball," said Sayre coach Greg Hughey.
"It hurts not having (injured) Cody VanBenthuysen in the line-up, and Brayden (Post) having to sit due to a red card," he noted. "Unfortunately, I think the talking from the other team got out of hand and Brayden re-acted.
"The boys who were left on the field played with intensity and heart," Hughey added.
Post scored about 5 1/2 minutes into the contest to give the Redskins a 1-0 lead.
After a goal by Trace Neary with 29:27 remaining in the first half tied the game, junior Mason Hughey scored the first of his four goals with 22:22 remaining to give Sayre a 2-1 lead.
Neary scored 25 seconds later to tie the game, then again with 14:37 left in the half to give the Griffins a 3-2 lead.
Freshman Alex Campbell scored with 8:59 remaining in the first half to tie the game at 3-3, but Riley King answered 17 seconds later to give Sullivan County a 4-3 advantage, which it took into the halftime intermission.
King scored again about 3 1/2 minutes into the second half, then Nate Higley added a goal, and King finished off his hat trick in a 56-second span to extend the lead to 7-3 with 31:34 left in the contest.
Neary scored his fourth and fifth goals in a two-minute span to make it 9-3 with 26:37 remaining in the game.
Hughey completed his hat trick with 21:56 left in the game, and tacked on his fourth tally with 2:53 remaining.
"Mason (Hughey) was big for us today," said coach Hughey.
Sullivan had a 20-10 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 13-6 edge in corner kicks.
Sophomore Cole Gelbutis had six saves in net for the Redskins, and freshman Aiden Ennis recorded five.
Sayre, now 1-2, returns to action Tuesday at North Penn-Liberty.
"We will re-group and go again on Tuesday," said Hughey. "I'm hoping to play with our full squad soon, as we've really shown some glimpses of being a really good team."
