NTL BOYS SOCCER: SAYRE ROLLS TO 5-2 WIN AT TROY (2020-10-19)

Valley Sports Report
EAST TROY - Junior Mason Hughey had another prolific scoring day, and senior Cody VanBenthuysen returned from injury to lead Sayre to a 5-2 win over Troy in NTL boys soccer here on a rainy Monday afternoon.

"The weather conditions tonight didn't get as bad as I thought, but both teams still slipped quite a bit," said Sayre coach Greg Hughey.

After scoring five goals Thursday, Mason Hughey tallied four more goals Monday to give him 29 on the season, while VanBenthuysen had one goal and one assist in his return.

"This was Cody's first game back in four weeks so he added another dimension to our offense," said coach Hughey.

"We worked the ball around well tonight, and made some great runs," he noted. "We had plenty of opportunities and were able to take advantage of them.

"We had multiple people moving to the ball and making some great passes," added Hughey.

Hughey put the Redskins on the scoreboard with 28:52, and VanBenthuysen made it 2-0 just 6 1/2 minutes later.

With 17 minutes remaining in the first half, Hughey extended the lead to 3-0. He needed just 20 seconds to finish off his hat trick, and give the Redskins a 4-0 lead it would carry into the halftime intermission.

Hughey was also pleased with his team's defensive performance.

"Trevor (Campbell) moved back to defense and did a great job for us," he noted. "Gunner (McCutcheon) also played very well tonight and was flying to the ball.

"Our back line held quite a bit and resisted different runs," said Hughey. "It was good to see them working together.

"Overall, it was a great win for us tonight," added Hughey.

Jacob Case put the Trojans on the board about 11 minutes into the second half, but Hughey put the finishing touches on his day about 7 1/2 minutes later to end any thoughts of a comeback.

Troy's Brady Sparling provided the final margin with 4:53 remaining in the contest.

Sophomore Brayden Post and freshman Alex Campbell had two assists apiece for the Redskins.

Owen Williams had nine saves in net for the Trojans, while sophomore Cole Gelbutis had eight for the Redskins.

Sayre had a 14-10 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 3-0 edge in corner kicks.

Sayre, now 5-7, hosts Athens on Thursday.
