NTL JV GIRLS BASKETBALL: ATHENS BESTS CANTON; SENDS RETIRNING COACH OUT ON WINNING NOTE (2021-02-27)

ATHENS "” Athens jumped ahead early and pulled away for a 42-34 win over Canton in NTL junior varsity girls basketball action to send coach Bob Stowits into retirement on a winning note.

Stowits has been the Athens JV coach for three years under varsity coach Brian Miller. He coached the Waverly JV girls for 14 years, including 10 under Miller. In all, Stowits has 21 years of coaching junior high / high school basketball.

Five different players scored buckets in the first quarter to help Athens to a 10-4 lead.

Mya Thomson scored six points, and Emma Bronson knocked down a 3-pointer to fuel an 11-6 spurt that put the junior Lady Wildcats up 21-10 at the half.

Thompson scored six more points in the third quarter, and Natalee Watson added four points in a 15-7 run that extended the Athens lead to 36-17 entering the final eight minutes.

Thompson led Athens with 14 points, six rebounds, six steals, three assists, and one blocked shot, while Bronson had 10 points, six boards, three assists, and one blocked shot, and Watson added eight points and three rebounds.

Karlee Bartlow had four points, seven rebounds, three assists, and one blocked shot in the win, Abby Champion chipped in with four points, and Izzy Davis grabbed three boards.

Sarah Davy led Canton with 11 points, and Carolyn Thoren added six.

Athens finishes the season with a 14-8 record.
