SECTION IV FIELD HOCKEY: MARATHON RALLIES TO EDGE TIOGA, 4-3, IN OVERTIME (24 PHOTOS) (2021-04-12)

Valley Sports Report
TIOGA CENTER "” Marathon scored a goal in the final minute of regulation to force overtime, then scored about 2 1/2 minutes into the extra session to pull out a 4-3 win over Tioga here Monday afternoon in Section IV Division III field hockey action.

"We played a great game, considering we literally just returned from a spring break where we only had seven athletes at our practices," said Tioga coach Jodi Riggs.

"Overall, we are a much-improved team from when we started out our short season against (Marathon) in our opener in early March," added Riggs.

Shelby Retorto gave Tioga a 1-0 lead early in the game, off a feed from Olivia Ayres.

Ayres and Marathon's Kate Anderson scored later in the first half, and the Lady Tigers led 2-1 at the intermission.

Ayres scored again, off a feed from Julia Walsh, in the second half, to make it 3-1. Emily Ensign scored twice for Marathon in the final three minutes, including the game-tying goal with 39 seconds remaining in regulation to leave the game tied at 3-3.

With 7:34 remaining in overtime, Anderson netted the game-winner for the Lady Olympians.

"Our senior captain, Liv Ayres, scored two beautiful unanswered goals," said Riggs.

Marathon had a 24-6 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 29-4 advantage in penalty corners.

Aubrey Nichols recorded 14 saves in the cage for Tioga. The Lady Tigers also had nine defensive saves.

"Our defensive team held strong with 14 goalie saves, and multiple saves by Bobbi Jo Tarbox and Dakota Forsyth, who just joined us after a long quarantine," said Riggs.

"Unfortunately, we were a bit sloppy in our defensive circle, giving Marathon 29 corners, many of which occurred in our first quarter, exhausting our offensive from the start," she added.

Tioga, now 0-5, travels to Moravia Wednesday.
