TRAVEL SOFTBALL (14U): SOUTHERN TIER THUNDER '06 OFF TO GOOD START IN 2021 (2021-06-14)

WILLIAMSPORT - The Elmira Heights-based Southern Tier Thunder '06 14U travel softball team has reached the finals in its first two tournaments - winning the Memorial Day Bonanza, and finishing second here over the weekend at the Billtown Brawl.

Pool Play
Southern Tier Thunder '06 10, Impact Panthers 3

The Thunder jumped ahead early and put the game away with a five-run third-inning rally in a 10-3 win over the Clark Summit, Pa.-based Impact Panthers Saturday morning.

Waverly's Olivia Robinson belted a pair of doubles, scored two runs, and had three RBI, and Williamson's Kenna Buchanan doubled and singled, scored one run, and drove in one run to pace the Thunder's eight-hit attack.

Edison's Maddison Pack and Horseheads' Addy Hester each doubled, scored two runs, and drove in one run, while Athens' Ella Coyle doubled, scored one run, and knocked in one run, and  Edison's Brianna Korsky doubled and scored one run. Troy's Caitlyn Knapp had one RBI.

Buchanan earned the win, allowing one unearned run on two hits, while striking out three wand walking one in two innings. Edison's Mariana Frosolone pitched two innings in relief, allowing two runs - one earned - on three hits, while striking out four and walking none.

Southern Tier Thunder '06 13, Binghamton Blast 4

The Thunder scored five runs in the first inning and caused to a 13-4 win over the Binghamton Blast Saturday morning.

Robinson put the Thunder on top 1-0 with an RBI single, and Buchanan made it 3-0 with a two-run single. Corning's Jade Cook capped the scoring with a two-run single to make it 5-0.

Korsky singled twice and scored three runs, and Robinson singled twice, scored two runs, and drove in one run to pace the Thunder at the plate, while Athens' Jules Pack hit a solo home run, and Buchanan singled, scored two runs, and knocked in two runs.

Cook singled and drove in two runs in the win, while Knapp singled, scored two runs, and drove in one run, and Frosolone singled and scored two runs.

Frosolone earned the win, with two innings of one-hit ball. She struck out four and walked two.

Buchanan pitched the final two innings, allowing four runs - all unearned - on one hit and one walk, while striking out two.

Southern Tier Thunder '06 14, Southern Tier Thunder 14U 2

The Thunder '06 scored four runs in the bottom of the first to take a 4-2 lead, then poured it on in a 14-2 win over the Southern Tier Thunder Saturday afternoon.

Buchanan had three hits, including a doubled, two runs scored, and four RBI to pace the Thunder '06's 15-hit attack, while Robinson and Frosolone each singled twice, scored three runs, and drove in one run, and Cook added a pair of singles.

Jules Pack singled, scored one run, and drove in one run, while Bath's Caydence Spears singled, scored twice, and knocked in one run, Coyle doubled and drove in two runs, Knapp singled, scored once, and drove in one run, Korsky singled and scored one run, and Maddison Pack added a single.

Robinson earned the win, allowing two runs on three hits, while striking out four and walking one in three innings of work.

Southern Tier Thunder '06 7, Dynasty 14U 4
The Thunder scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, then held off the Lawrenceville-based Dynasty for a 7-4 win Saturday afternoon to finish 4-0 in pool play.

Korsky was 3-for-3 with two runs scored, and Jules Pack was 2-for-2 with two doubles and one run scored to pace the Thunder's 10-hit attack, while Maddison Pack doubled and singled, scored two runs, and drove in two runs.

Coyle singled and scored one run in the win, while Cook singled, scored once, and drove in one run,, Frosolone singled and drove in one run, and Robinson had one RBI.

Spears earned the win, allowing four runs on two hits and five walks, while striking out six in five innings in the circle.

Semifinals
Southern Tier Thunder '06 5, Impact Panthers 1

In the semifinals, Buchanan turned in a strong pitching performance to help the Thunder to a 5-1 win over the Clarks Summit, Pa.-based Impact Panthers in a rematch of the opening game of pool play.

Buchanan allowed one run on two hits, while striking out three and walking three in 3 2/3 innings. Frosolone recorded the final out.

Coyle doubled and drove in two runs, while Frosolone doubled, scored once, and knocked in one ru, and Buchanan singled, scored one run, and drove in one run to pace the Thunder at the plate.

Spears singled and drove in one run in the win, while Korsky singled and scored one run, and Knapp and Jules Pack each scored one run.

Championship Game
Northwest Explosion 10, Southern Tier Thunder '06 3

The Explosion scored four runs the third inning, and four more in the fourth on its way to a 10-3 win over the Thunder in the championship game Sunday morning.

Korsky singled twice and drove in one run, while Robinson singled and knocked in one run, Coyle and Spears each singled and scored one run, and Jules Pack, Buchanan, and Spears each added a single to account for the Thunder's eight hits.

MEMORIAL DAY BONANZA
Earlier this season, the Southern Tier Thunder '06 won the Memorial Day Bonanza at the BAGSAI Softball Complex in Binghamton. The Thunder went 4-0 in pool play to earn the top seed, and was awarded the title by virtue of the top seed when bracket play was washed out by rain.

The Thunder opened play a 9-0 win over Hazleton-based Pocono Pride Saturday afternoon.

Buchanan doubled and singled and drove in one run, and Spears singled twice and scored one run to lead the offense. Robinson singled, scored two runs, and drove in one run, and Pack knocked in one run.

In their first game Sunday, the Thunder rolled to a 19-9 win over Apalachin-based Eyota Nation.

Frosolone fanned 11 and walked two in four innings of one-hit ball to earn the win.

Robinson singled twice, scored one run, and had three RBI, and Coyle singled twice, scored two runs, and drove in one run to pace the Thunder at the plate. Caitlyn Knapp doubled and singled, and scored three runs, and Jules Pack scored one run.

The Thunder improved to 3-0 in the tournament with a 8-0 run over Pocono Pride Sunday morning.

In their last game of the weekend, the Thunder gave up three runs in the top of the fifth, but answered with two in the home half to pull out a 6-5 win over Horseheads-based Fury Fastpitch in the semifinals.

After Fury Fastpitch took a 5-4 lead after 4 1/2 innings, Knapp hit a solo home run with one out in the home half of the fifth inning to tie the game at 5-5.

After a double by Buchanan doubled, and Spears singled to put runners not he corner, Hester delivered the game-winning RBI single to center field.

Buchanan was 3-for-3 with two doubles, one run scored, and one RBI to lead the Thunder at the plate, and Spears was 3-for-3 with a run scored, and one RBI. Coyle singled and scored in the win, while Jules Pack scored one run, and Robinson had one RBI.
