VALLEY SPORTS REPORT: ATHENS' LIECTHY, MILLER SHARE FEMALE 'ATHLETE OF THE FALL' HONORS (2021-07-29)

Valley Sports Report
THE VALLEY "” The Athens volleyball team's run to the District 2-4 Sub-Regional finals was the story of the fall, and the driving forces on the team were seniors Leah Liechty and Kayleigh Miller who are the 2020-21 Valley Sports Report "Super 7 Female Athletes of the Fall."

Liechty, a powerful middle hitter, led the Lady Wildcats with 203 kills and 38 blocks, including 29 solo blocks. She also had 74 service points,including 17 aces, 44 setter assists, and 37 digs.

Miller, a sure-handed and smooth setter, dished out 421 setter assists to top 1,000 for her career. She also had 150 service points, including 28 aces, 137 digs, and four blocks.

Liechty and Miller shared the Volleyball "Player of the Year" honors.

Leah Liechty, senior, Athens: See above.

Kayleigh Miller, senior, Athens: See above.

Emma Roe, senior, Athens: Roe is an electric presence on the field - a non-stop dynamo from one end of the field to the other for the Lady Wildcats. She scored 19 goals and doled out eight assists in 13 games. She will play at Wagner College in the fall.

Roe was the VSR "Offensive Player of the Year," shared "Player of  the Year" honors with Waverly's Gabby Picco.

Gabby Picco, senior, Waverly: Picco, a polished all-around player with a sky-high soccer IQ, consistently controlled the midfield and made all her teammates better. She scored six goals and had one assist. She will play at LaSalle University.

She shared "Player of  the Year" honors with Athens' Emma Roe.

Emma Bronson, sophomore, Athens: Bronson finished 20th at the District 4, Class AA Championships, running 30 seconds faster than she had the previous meet at the NTL Coaches Invite, which she won. In a normal year, she would have been the first runner to miss out on a trip to States.

Bronson was the Cross Country "Runner of the Year."

Carrie Claypool, senior, Sayre: Claypool finished seventh at the NTL Coaches Invite, and eighth at the District 4, Class A Championships, missing a trip to States by less than 1 second. She led the Lady Redskins in every dual meet this season. She will run this fall at Division II Mansfield University.

Hannah Blackman, senior, Athens: A premier defender, with a sky-high soccer IQ, Blackman was the VSR Soccer "Defensive Player of the Year." She will play this fall at Division II Millersville.
