IAC GIRLS SWIMMING: SOUTHERN CAYUGA RALLIES TO EDGE WAVERLY, 86-81 (13 PHOTOS) (2021-09-16)
Valley Sports ReportWAVERLY "” Southern Cayuga won the last four events, and also had a third-place finish in the meet-closing 400-yard freestyle relay to pull out a 86-81 win over Waverly here Thursday afternoon in IAC girls swimming action.
Seniors Lourden Benjamin and Willow Sharpsteen, and 8th-grader Mira Kittle were double-winners for the Lady Wolverines, who fall to 1-1 on the season.
Benjamin, Sharpsteen and Kittle teamed with senior Delaney Vascoe to win meet-opening 200-yard freestyle relay in a time of 2:09.82 - 21 1/2 seconds faster than Southern Cayuga's foursome. Waverly's second really team finished third to it to a quick 10-4 lead.
Benjamin won the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:22.49, but Southern Cayuga swimmers finished 2-4 to trim the deficit to 17-13.
Vascoe (2:36.35) and 8th-grader Liz Robinson (2:56.44) finished 2-3 in the 200-meter IM, but SC's 1-4-5 finish trimmed the lead to 24-22.
Kittle won the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 28.0 seconds, and junior Sophia DeSisti was third in 28.64 seconds as Waverly extended its lead to 35-27.
Robinson posted her first varsity victory in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 1:21.77, and junior Josie VanDyke was second in 1:27.33 to give Waverly a 45–30 advantage.
DeSisti won the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 1:02.8, and Benjamin was third in 1:03.55 as Waverly took its biggest lead in the meet, at 54-37.
Sharpsteen won the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 6:27.2, but SC swimmers finished 2-3 to keep the Waverly lead at 17 points, at 62–45.
The Lady Chiefs won the 200-meter freestyle really, edging the Waverly foursome by 0.78 seconds. They also finished third to trim the deficit to 66-55.
Southern Cayuga finished 1-3-5 in the 100-yard backstroke to pull within four points, at 72-65. Kittle finished second in the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:12.47 for the Lady Wolverines.
Vascoe finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:23.95, with SC swimmers finished 1-3-4 to pull within one point, at 77-76.
Southern Cayuga's win in the 400-meter relay, plus the third-place finish gave them 86-81 win.
The Lady Wolverines host their annual invitational Saturday.
