YOUTH BASKETBALL: OPENING-ROUND GAMES PLAYED IN MIKE HUGHES, MIKE DANIELS TOURNAMENTS (2022-03-08)
Valley Sports ReportATHENS — The opening-round games of the Mike Daniels and Mike Hughes basketball tournaments were played here Monday night.
Towanda and Sayre won the opening-round games in the Mike Hughes Tournament (6th-grade girls), while Towanda and Waverly won the opening-round games in the Mike Daniels Tournament (6th-grade boys).
MIKE HUGHES TOURNAMENT
Towanda 16, Athens 8Kenzie Brown scored six points to lead Towanda to a 16-8 win over Athens in the opening-round of the Mike Hughes Tournament, while Mary Kate Eberlin and Ali Owlett each added four points.
Allie Kemp netted six points to lead Athens.
Sayre 33, Waverly 8Maci Wheeler pumped in 21 points, and McKenna Parrish added six points to lead Sayre to a 33-8 win over Waverly.
Mia Correll led Waverly with four points
Athens will play Waverly Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the third-place game, while Sayre will square off with Towanda Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the championship game. Both games will be played in the Lynch-Bustin Gymnasium.
MIKE DANIELS TOURNAMENT
Towanda 31, Athens 11Josh Maye and Keegan Stroud scored 10 points apiece to lead Towanda to a 31-11 win over Athens in the opening-round of the Mike Daniels Tournament.
Sam Cheresnowsky led Athens with four points.
Waverly 31, Sayre 14Jack Pipher and Jeremy Cleveland scored eight points apiece to lead a balanced Waverly offense in a 31-14 win over Sayre.
Michael Sutryk paced Sayre with seven points.
Athens will play Sayre in the third-place game Tuesday at 7 p.m., while Waverly and Towanda will square off in the championship game Wednesday at 7 p.m. Both games will be played in the Lynch-Bustin Gymnasium.
