THE SPORTS REPORTS: WAVERLY'S VANDERPOOL HEADLINES ALL-REGION TEAM AS 'BOWLER OF THE YEAR' (2022-03-29)

The Sports Reports
Waverly junior Zach Vanderpool was the top bowler in the IAC and Section IV this season, and made his first trip to States. He headlines the The Sports Reports' 2021-22 All-Region teams as the “Bowler of the Year.”

Owego 7th-grader Evan O’Hara is “Newcomer of the Year,” and Owego’s Rusty Virkler and Corning’s William Condon share “Coach of the Year” honors.

Vanderpool posted an IAC and Section IV high 226 average this season. His high series in the regular series was 794, and he rolled a high game of 289.

He finished second at the Section IV State Qualifier with a nine-game set of 2,071 (230.1 average), including a 798 series series at the Class C Championships, which was good for a first-place finish.

Vanderpool placed 30th in a field of 66 at States, rolling a six-game set of 1,223 for a 203.83 average.

O’Hara posted a 194 average, 15th among bowlers in The Sports Report’s coverage area.

O’Hara recorded a season-high series of 678 against Windsor on Jan. 11 and his high game, a 258, came on Dec. 6 against Susquehanna Valley.

He paced the Indians with a 664 series as they won the Section IV Class B tournament and his score was good for fourth place individually.

Virkler  led Owego to a 48-2 dual match record, and the STAC Division 3 and overall conference championships, as well as the Class B crown.

The Indians would also finish as the runner-up in the team chase at the Section IV State Qualifier and had one of just two state qualifiers from Tioga County (Cole Dalton).

Condon led Corning to a third-place finish at States, and made a run for the state title. Using a strong second set of three games the Hawks rallied in the afternoon and nearly came away with a state title, bringing home a third-place finish in the state.

The Hawks won the state qualifier and had two of the top 10 finishers in the team competition at States.
