SAYRE — The Sayre junior high baseball team rolled to a a pair of wins Saturday to cap its 2022 campaign with a 12-1-2 record.

The junior Redskins topped Northeast Bradford 13-3, and Athens #2, 19-1, for their fourth straight win.

Sayre 13, NEB 3
A trio of Sayre pitchers combined on a one-hitter, and Karter Green had three RBI in a 13-3 win over Northeast Bradford.

Hogan Shaw fanned five and walked two in two hitless inning to earn the win for Sayre, while Ronin Ault struck out two and walked one in a hitless inning of relief.

Green finished off the game, allowing three runs on one hit, while striking out five and walking two in two innings.

Green had three hits, including a pair of doubles, three runs scored, and three RBI, while Ault singled twice and scored four runs, and Brendan Cooke singled twice, scored one run, and drove in one run to pace Sayre’s 12-hit attack.

Chase Wheeler and Shaine Strickland each singled and scored one run, while Jackson Varner singled and drove in one run, Logan Zinger added a single, and Shaw scored one run and knocked in one run.

Sayre 19, Athens #2 1
Sayre scored eight runs in the second and third innings to close out a 19-1 three-inning win over Athens #2.

Brendan Cooke and Logan Zingeser shared duties on the mound, and combined on a no-hitter. They allowed an unearned run on six walks, while striking out three.

Sayre rapped out 15 hits in the win.

Justin Koenig doubled and singled, scored two runs, and drove in two runs, while Brady Flynn singled twice, scored two runs, and knocked in one run, Ronin Ault singled twice and scored two runs, and Jackson Varner singled twice, scored one run, and drove in one run.

Shaine Strickland and Karter Green each singled, scored two runs, and drove in one run in the win, while Hogan Shaw singled, scored two runs, and drove in two runs, Aaron McCarthy and Jordan Brown each singled, scored one run, and knocked in one run, Chase Wheeler singled and scored two runs, Logan Howard scored one run and drove in one run, and Drake Cranford had one RBI.

Sayre played three epic games with crosstown rival Athens, and split them 1-1-1.

On April 20, Athens edged Sayre, 2-1, in the first game of a doubleheader, but the Redskins bounced back with a 10-7 win. On May 14, the two rivals locked up in a 0-0 seven-inning tie.

Athens 2, Sayre 1
Matthias Welles and Nick Grazul combined on a one-hitter to outduel Ronin Ault and Hogan Shaw in Athens’ 2-1 win in the first game of the twinbill.

Welles allowed one run on one hit, while striking out three and walking five in two innings, while Grazul struck out two and walked one in three scoreless innings of relief to earn the win.

Ault was tagged with the loss, allowing two runs on two hits, while striking out six and walking two in three innings of work. Shaw fanned three and allowed one hit in a scoreless inning of relief.

Adam Kemp singled and drove in two runs, while Alex McQuay and Lucas Persun each added a single to account for Athens’ hits.

Shaw singled, Brendan Cooke scored, and Justin Koenig drove in a run to account for Sayre’s offense.

Sayre 10, Athens 7
Sayre built a 10-1 lead, and held off a late rally for a 10-7 win over Athens in the nightcap.

Karter Green doubled and singled, scored two runs, and drove in four runs to pace Sayre’s seven-hit attack, while Ronin Ault and Brendan Cooke each singled and scored two runs, and Shaine Strickland singled, scored one run, and drove in one run.

Justin Koenig and Jackson Varner each singled and drove in one run for Sayre, while Hogan Shaw scored two runs, Chase Wheeler scored one run, and Declan Barry drove in one run.

Green had the strongest turn on the mound, allowing one hit, while striking out five and walking one in three scoreless innings of relief to earn the win.

Eli Hobday singled and scored two runs, while Dalton Davis singled, scored one run, and drove in one run, and Nick Grazul doubled and scored one run to lead Athens at the plate.

Aidan Kemp singled and knocked in one run for the junior Wildcats, while Karson Sipley added a single, Matthias Welles, Hayden Mercer, and Eli Chapman each scored one run, and Cylus Lantz knocked in one run.

Sayre 0, Athens 0 … 9 innings
Ronin Ault and Karter Green combined on a two-hitter for Sayre, while the Athens tandem of Nick Grazul and Duncan Thetga allowed just four hits in a scoreless seven-inning tie.

Ault fanned nine and walked one, while allowing two hits in six innings of work. Green struck out two in a scoreless inning of relief.

Grazul fanned 11 and walked one, while allowing just one hit in 4 1/3 innings of work for the junior Wildcats. Thetga allowed three hits in 2 2/3 innings, while striking out two and walking one.

Brendan Cooke, Justin Koenig, Jackson Varner, and Chase Wheeler accounted for Sayre’s four hits — all singles.

Eli Chapman tripled and Cylus Lantz singled to account for Athens’ two hits.

The Redskins other blemish was an 8-8 tie against Wellsboro on opening day (april 2). Sayre won the rematch, 4-1.

Karter Green and Hogan Shaw combined on a four-hitter to lead Sayre to a 4-1 win over Wellsboro.

Green allowed one run on three hits in 4 1/3 innings to earn the win, while striking out six and walking one.

Shaw notched the save, allowing one hit and striking out two in 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Ronin Ault tripled and doubled, and scored one un, and Shaw singled, scored one run, and had two RBI to lead Sayre at the plate, while Jackson Varner added a single, Green had an RBI, and Declan Barry and Chase Wheeler each scored one run.

In their other games this season, the junior Redskins beat Wyalusing, 18-3, Williamson, 32-0 and 7-1, Towanda, 15-0 and 18-2, Canton, 8-1, Towanda, 11-3, and NEB, 14-3.

• Ronin Ault led Sayre with a .581 batting average (18 hits in 31 ABs), and also had a team-high 27 runs scored, five triples, six hit by pitches, and 13 stolen bases.

ª Hogan Shaw, who hit .471 (16 hits in 34 ABs), led the team with six doubles. He also had 20 runs scored and 18 RBI.

• Justin Koenig, who hit .444 (16 hits in 36 ABs) led the team with 20 RBI.

• Brendan Cooke, who hit .389 (14 hits in 36 ABs), led the team with 16 walks. He also had 20 runs scored.

•  Karter Green hit .429 (12 hits in 28 ABs) with five doubles, 17 RBI, 19 runs scored, and 10 stolen bases.

PITCHING
•  Ault struck out 41 and walked seven in 18 2/3 innings. He had a 0.75 ERA.

•  Green struck out 29 and walked nine in 15 2/3 innings. He had a 3.57 ERA.
