ALL-TIOGA COUNTY BOYS TRACK & FIELD: S-VE’S RECORD-SETTING WALTER LEADS TALENTED GROUP; NV’S SHERWOOD, WAVERLY’S CHANDLER & BECHY, S-VE’S HOLMES PICK UP AWARDS (2022-06-24)

Valley Sports Report
TIOGA COUNTY — Among the local area’s talented group of track & field performers were a trio of athletes who reached the podium at the NYSPHSAA Division II championships.

Newark Valley’s Jonny Sherwood, Spencer-Van Etten’s Elliott Walter, and Waverly’s Micah Chandler combined to place four times with Walter grabbing two honors.

Walter, a senior and the All-Tioga County “Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year,” hurled the discus 148 feet on Day 1 to place fourth in Division II. On Day 2, he broke an 11-year-old school record with a toss of 150-1, placing him sixth in the Federation meet.

Also named the "Field Athlete of the Year,” Walter won the IAC overall and Division II titles in the shot put and the D-2 discus. He dominated the discus and shot put at the Section IV Class D meet, then won the overall and Division II discus titles at the state qualifier. He was second in D-2 and overall in the shot put.

Sherwood and Chandler would share the “Track Athlete of the Year” honor. Each athlete would lead his team throughout the season.

Sherwood’s versatility allowed him to compete successfully in six different events. He would win IAC titles in the 1600- and 3200-meter runs, and the 3,000 steeplechase. He would go on to compete in the latter at the Class C meet, winning by more than a minute, then added the Section IV overall title. At the state championships, he placed fourth in Division II.

Chandler won the 400 hurdles at the IAC, Class C and Section IV meets. He also qualified for states in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. At the state championships, the sophomore placed fifth in the hurdles, but an injury forced him out of the relays.

Waverly’s Kayleb Bechy is the “Newcomer of the Year.” A junior, Bechy qualified for the state championships in two events.

Bechy finished second overall in the 100 at the state qualifier and was part of the victorious 4x100 relay. He was the 100 champ in the Class C meet and set a personal record of 11.15 seconds at states, where he finished 20th. He also ran the opening leg of the relay which won the IAC, Class C and state qualifier titles. The relay went on to finish 10th at the state championships.

S-VE’s Ryan Holmes edged out Waverly’s Dave Hogan and Tioga’s Eric Gutierrez to pick up the “Coach of the Year” honor. What the Panthers lacked in depth and talent, they made up for with heart and dedication. S-VE bested IAC South Small School champ Tioga by nine points to win the IAC Small School title.

Holmes would also have the pleasure of coaching Walter — the only Tioga County athlete to medal twice at states.
