YOUTH SOCCER (13U): BC UNITED WINS OPENING GAME OF POOL PLAY AT EASTERN REGIONALS (16 PHOTOS) (2022-06-25)

Valley Sports Report
CHARLESTON, W.Va. — BC United scored midway through the second half and made the goal stand in a 1-0 win over Metropolitan Oval Academy here Thursday in the opening game of pool play at the USYS Eastern Regional Championships.

The BC United team feature four Valley girls — Waverly’s Lauren Gorsline, Sierra Lunsford, and Makenzie Olmsted, and Athens’ Delanie Patton, as well as Owego’s Ashlyn Dalton, Candor Meredith Stouffer, Horseheads’ Ashley Giammichele, and Notre Dame’s Mary Katherine Young.

BC United took control at the opening whistle, but lost momentum quickly. Maspeth N.Y.-based Met Oval attacked the ball and won seemingly every ball. BC United’s defenders scrambled and handled all attacks.

Midway through the first half, Met Oval just missed on a long shot from the top right side of penalty box. The shot crossed the goal, and missed wide left.

The second-half started much like the first half, with BC United moving the ball well.

BC United continued its strong play, and the team’s leading scorer, Shannon Kingsbury, narrowly missed on a shot from the left win about 15 minutes into the second half.

With 20 minutes remaining, Kingsbury scored on a rebound off the Met Oval keeper to give BC United a 1-0 lead. Stouffer, who took the shot-on-goal, was credited with the assist.

BC United survived a couple of late scares to pull out the win.

BC United continues pool play Saturday afternoon at 2:30 against Penn Alliance Select Elite, based in Glendale, Pa.
