YOUTH SOCCER (13U): BC UNITED IMPROVES TO 2-0 IN POOL PLAY WITH ANOTHER 1-0 WIN (12 PHOTOS) (2022-06-25)

Valley Sports Report
BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. — The BC United 13U premier soccer team won its second consecutive 1-0 game — topping Glendale, Pa.-based Penn Alliance Select Elite — to improve to 2-0 in pool play here Saturday afternoon at the USYS Eastern Regional Championships.

The win ensures BC United will win the pool and advance to the semifinals.

The BC United team feature four Valley girls — Waverly’s Lauren Gorsline, Sierra Lunsford, and Makenzie Olmsted, and Athens’ Delanie Patton, as well as Owego’s Ashlyn Dalton, Candor Meredith Stouffer, Horseheads’ Ashley Giammichele, and Notre Dame’s Mary Katherine Young.

Shannon Kingsbury broke free on the left-side of the field to score the game’s only goal wishing the first six minutes of the match, and the BC United defense made it stand.

BC United controlled the game early.  Defenders MK Young, Jelsie Stafford, Janelle Muenzen and Peyton Tefft, Meradyth Stouffer and Lunsford took turns deflecting attacks well away from Penn Alliance’s goal.

BC attackers, especially Kingsbury and Dalton, had a speed advantage against Penn Alliance’s defense.  While the BC duo blew by defenders, Penn Alliance played solid team defense and thwarted shot attempts.

Despite multiple stoppages for hydration breaks (the game was played at temperatures above 90 degrees) BC continued to roll.

Four minutes into the second half BC barely missed on a corner kick opportunity. Dalton blasted a corner kick into the keeper box that Kingsbury headed just over the goal.

Later, midfielder Jocelyn Turshman fired an open shot from the right side of the box that just missed wide left.

While time dwindled, Penn Alliance increased the intensity of their attacks and began to gain some traction, getting shots on goal.  However, BC settled in to a game of ball control and keep away, playing the ball into their offensive corners to eat up the clock.

BC United closes out pool play Sunday at 9:30 a.m. when it takes on Sporting CT ’09.
