THE VALLEY — The 2022-23 winter seasons gets underway this week, but the marquee event of the week has the Tioga football team in action at the JMA Wireless Dome (formerly the Carrier Dome) Saturday afternoon in defense of its New York State Class D football state title.

There are 13 events on the docket this week, including five on Saturday and four on Friday.

The following are all of the home varsity events this week, and a few of the notable road events:

MONDAY (0)
There are no varsity events on the schedule.

TUESDAY (2)
•  The Waverly bowling teams open the season at home against Lansing.

WEDNESDAY (0)
•  There are no varsity events on the schedule.

THURSDAY (2)
•  The Waverly bowling teams host Union Springs at the Valley Bowling Center.

FRIDAY (4)
•  The Sayre girls open the season at home against Wellsboro.

•  The Sayre boys open the season at Susquehanna in the first game of the Bradford-Susquehanna Counties Challenge.

•  The Athens girls open the season against Johnson City at the Johnson City Tournament.

SATURDAY (5)
•  Tioga looks to defend its New York State Class D football title against unbeaten Cambridge-Salem at the JMA Wireless Dome in Syracuse.

•  The Waverly girls and boys basketball teams open the 2022-23 campaign at Chenango Forks.

•  The Sayre boys play Blue Ridge in the second game of the Bradford-Susquehanna Counties Challenge.
