IAC BOYS BASKETBALL: JUDSON SAYS WAVERLY PLAYING CATCH-UP AFTER FOOTBALL TEAM'S SUCCESS (8 PHOTOS) (2022-11-28)

WAVERLY — Waverly basketball coach Lou Judson enjoyed watching the Wolverines’ success on the gridiron this fall, but now his team is behind in its preparation for the rapidly approaching 2022-23 season.

“It’s been an exciting fall season for a lot of sports programs around here, and I’m one of the bigger fans,” said Judson. “I love watching football.

“It’s great to be back on the court again, though” he noted. “We’re way behind in terms of conditioning, but so are a lot of other teams, and some teams in our Section are still playing.”

Judson notes his football players missed six practices due to their run to the state playoffs.

“We’re doing a lot more conditioning than we usually do We’re crunching things in … every minute in practice counts now.

“These guys have been with me for quite some time, and we played 25 basketball games over the summer, so a lot of the stuff we’re doing is very similar,” added Judson. “We’re just doing a little tweaking here and there.”

Judson said his numbers are down slightly.

“Our numbers are just about where they usually are.

“We only have nine on varsity … we had a couple kids who played with us all summer decide not to play,” said Judson. “It’s not always about quantity, though, I really like the quality of what we have here. I would like to think my top seven are as good as about any top seven in the area.

“We have 12 kids on the JV team, and about 25 in our modified program,” added Judson.

Waverly already has one scrimmage (at Mansfield) in the books, and will scrimmage at Corning Tuesday night.

“I thought the scrimmage went very well. It was pretty even,” said Judson. “Mansfield is pretty tough this year.”

Waverly opens the season Saturday at Chenango Forks. The Wolverines’ game on Dec. 6 against Tioga has been re-scheduled for Feb. 4.
