THE VALLEY — The first-ever New York State Girls Wrestling Invitational headlines Friday’s action, the majority of which is on the road, but there is some action in the Valley with the Athens and Sayre girls basketball teams, and the Waverly boys swim team at home.

WRESTLING
New York State Girls Invitational, 1 p.m. @ SRC Arena, Onondaga CC, Syracuse:
Tioga and Waverly will compete in the first-ever girls state tournament that is run by NYSPHSAA.

Tioga senior Emily Sindoni, who is the top-ranked 126-pounder in the nation, is the top seed at 132 pounds, and is expected to square off with second-seeded Gouverneur sophomore Zoey Griffith, who is a two-time Eastern States champ, in the finals.

Tioga sophomore Kyah Nelson is the second seed at 165 pounds.

Waverly senior Mackenzie LaForest, who, like Sindoni, was a Section IV champ last year, is the top seed at 235 pounds.

Also in action for the Wolverines are freshman Elona Holmes (152 pounds), 8th-grader Abby Sickler (100), and freshman Elizabeth Robinson (185).

Athens at Bedford Tournament, 5 p.m.: The Wildcats are off to another rugged tournament this weekend, which will feature several powerhouses like Chestnut Ridge, Greeneville, and Ligonier Valley.

BOYS BASKETBALL
Waverly (10-2 overall, 8-0 IAC Large) at Trumansburg (5-7, 3-4), 5:30 p.m. JV start:
The Wolverines are coming off a 76-26 crossover win over Whitney Point eight days ago, while the Blue Raiders dropped a 72-51 non-league decision to South Seneca Tuesday.

With a win, Waverly would clinch a tie for the IAC South Large School title. Waverly has not won a division title since 2017-18.

Tioga (7-5, 5-3 IAC Small) at Marathon (4-9, 2-7), 5:30 p.m. JV start:
The Tigers are coming off a 75-48 loss to Class A Union-Endicott Tuesday, while the Olympians dropped a 63-35 decision at Candor.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
NP-Mansfield (2-13, 1-4 NTL Small) at Sayre (3-12, 2-2 NTL Small), 6 p.m. (Varsity only):
The Lady Redskins are coming off a 42-20 loss to Athens Monday, while the Lady Tigers dropped a 51-27 decision to Towanda Friday.

The two teams play again Monday.

Wellsboro (6-8, 2-2 NTL Large) at Athens (10-5, 2-2), 6 p.m. JV start: The Wildcats are coming off a 42-20 win over Sayre Monday, while the Lady Hornets topped Cowanesque Valley, 37-21, on Friday.

The two teams play again Feb. 13.

BOYS SWIMMING
‘Lansing (4-1-1) at Waverly (3-2), 5 p.m.:
These two teams met 10 days ago in a meet won by Lansing, 106-62.
