STAC BOYS SOCCER: WAVERLY FALLS IN OPENER AS ELMIRA ERUPTS FOR SIX SECOND-HALF GOALS (20 PHOTOS) (2024-09-03)
Valley Sports ReportELMIRA — Waverly played Class 3A Elmira even for 40 minutes, but the Express scored three goals in the first 10 minutes of the season half on its way to a season-opening, 6-0, win here Tuesday night in STAC boys soccer action.
“I’m proud of the boys for putting up a good fight for 80 minutes,” said first-year Waverly coach Jon Rankin. “The first half of the game showed what we are capable as a program and allowed us to shine as a team.
“Coach Andrew Roney and I agree that we have some glows and some grows that will help take us to that next level and get us ready to have an improved season,” he added. “We have a young team with diverse skill.”
The defensive back line of junior Porter Daddona, sophomore Trent VanDyke, freshman Sam Cheresnowsky, and sophomore Collin Wheeler, in front of junior keeper Aiden Doherty, kept the Express off the board in the first half.
Elmira scored first goal just 87 seconds after the intermission, then scored again less than two minutes later to take a 2-0 lead.
After scoring with 30 minutes left in the game to extend the lead to 3-0, the Express scored two goals just 62 seconds apart to make it 5-0 with 25:19 remaining in the contest.
Landon Cook netted a hat trick for Elmira, while Luca Capilli had one goal, and two assists, and Brody Hamilton dished out two assists.
Elmira had a 27-1 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 7-0 edge in corner kicks.
Doherty registered 22 saves in net for the Wolverines, including 14 in the first half.
Waverly returns to action Thursday night in its home opener against Norwich. Game time is 7 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
