HORSEHEADS — Waverly bounced back from its first loss of the season with a one-point win over West Genesee to secure a second-place finish here Saturday at the Mark Stephens Classic.

The Wolverines finished the weekend with a 6-1 record, while West Genesee was 5-2. Middletown won the team title with an unblemished record of 7-0.

Waverly opened Saturday's action with a 73-6 win over Horseheads-2, and followed it up with a 73-6 win over Middletown-2.

In a battle of 5-0 teams, Middletown used four straight wins from 157 pounds through 190 pounds to pull out a 44-31 win over the Wolverines.

In the final match of the tournament, Waverly edged West Genesee, 40-39, in a battle of 5-1 teams.

Junior Rhylee Stotler, who was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler, junior Matthias Welles, and senior Daltton Davis were each 4-0 on the day, while senior Troy Beeman was 3-0.

Freshmen Avery Bowman and Brooks Lathrop, senior Cooper Robinson, and juniors Parker Larson and Joey Mack were all 3-1 Saturday.

For the weekend, Stotler, Welles and Davis were 7-0, while Beeman was 6-0, Mack was 6-1, and Bowman, Robinson, Larson, and 8th-grader Triton Floyd were each 5-2.

Waverly hosts Owego Free Academy Tuesday night.
