NTL SOFTBALL: SAYRE RIDES BIG INNING TO FIRST WIN OF SEASON (April 3, 2026)
Valley Sports ReportMILLVILLE — Sayre poured 12 runs across the plate in the top of the fourth inning to erase a two-run deficit on its way to an 18-5 five-inning win — its first of the season — over Millville here Friday afternoon in non-league softball action.
"We finally got the bats rolling," said Sayre coach Matt Senese. "It was a total team effort.
"It went back and fourth early, but we were finally able to bust it open with a big fourth inning — we got some clutch hits," added Senese.
The Redskins took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning without the benefit of a hit, using a hit batter and five base on balls, including consecutive bases-loaded walks to freshman Allia Bennett, junior Jade Roberts and freshman Afftyn VanDuzer.
The Quakers answered with four runs in the bottom of the second inning, then tacked on another run in the third to take a 5-3 lead.
In the top of the fourth inning, sophomore McKenna Parrish led off with a double — Sayre's first hit, and took third on a single by sophomore Emily Strickland.
After a wild pitch scored Parrish to close the lead to 5-4, senior Rylee Lantz worked a walk, and junior Zoey Ward hit the first pitch she saw for a two-RBI double to right field to give the Redskins the lead for good, at 6-5.
With one out, Roberts ripped a two-run single into left to make it 8-5.
Later in the inning, Lantz extended the Sayre lead to 11-5 with a two-RBI single up the middle, and senior Mikyah Brown made it 13-5 with an RBI single.
Roberts and VanDuzer worked bases-loaded walks to cap the rally at 15-5.
In the top of the fifth inning, Parrish, Strickland and Lantz ripped consecutive singles to make it 16-5, an error added a run, and VanDuzer capped the scoring with an RBI single.
Ward was the beneficiary of the offensive output, allowing five runs — all unearned run — on four hits, with five strikeouts and one walk to earn the win.
Strickland stroked three singles, stole two bases, and scored four runs to pace Sayre's 12-hit attack, while Lantz singled twice, stole two bases, scored two runs, and had three RBI, and Ward doubled and singled, scored two runs, and drove in two runs.
Parrish doubled and singled, and scored three runs in the win, while Roberts singled, scored one run, and had four RBI, Brown singled, scored two runs, and drove in two runs.
VanDuzer singled and drove in two runs for the Redskins, while Bennett scored one run and drove in one run, and freshman Isabella Stamile crossed the plate once.
Sayre, now 1-4, returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Athens.
